ResidntZoidberg wrote: I don't think the genre is dying out too much, just a part of it. Unfortunately, most of the games in the genre cover the 'Action' category very well (God of War Series, Devil May Cry Series, Ninja Gaiden Series, Etc), but not the 'Adventure' so much. Or more specifically, there's a terrible lack of platforming in Action/Adventure games today.
Titles that focus on combat, like the ones I mentioned, and do it well are great. But there's a huge lack of games in the realm of Ratchet and Clank or Crash Bandicoot. Not only that, but the 'Action' portion may even be getting rather stale. Devil May Cry revolutionized the genre when it released, and brought sexy back. God of War came in and did the same thing, adding a new level of brutality, and more puzzles. However, none of these series have done too much since then. They still turn out great titles, but if something new doesn't happen, they may get stale at some point.
But back to my original point, we have a serious lack of platformers. I'm not really sure why the genre is dying out, but it's been happening for a while. Heck, platforming was on the decline since about Playstation 2, or so. Though we do have some good platforming, it all comes from either Insomniac or Naughty Dog. Uncharted, though the game used guns a good deal, had some of the best platforming elements I had played through in a while. Insomniac always delivers fun platforming, and much more, with its stellar Ratchet and Clank series. There's also a good chance Naughty Dog's working on a new Jak and Daxter. But aside from that, what else is there? Some good free run in Assassin's Creed. Not much else.
I think the genre needs some life breathed into it on both fronts. Some more fun platformers- which unfortunately tend to have a stigma of being labeled "kiddy", though they're some of the roots of gaming- like we used to have, and then some revitalization of the Action genre. (Maybe Bayonetta, right Carbo?) But we might get that breath, at least for the Action genre, before Bayonetta, with titles like inFamous or Prototype. And of course LittleBigPlanet for the platforming side! ...!!! ....!!!
Good points.

I prefer FPS's on a computer anyway. A mouse has way better accuracy and response than any gamepad.

Yeah I agree. I really like adventure and RPG games but there are just none out. All the new games are some sort of shooters, for PS3 there is Dark Kingdom which at best was mediocre then there is R&C ToD but what else that is any good.

Well you must hate the classic Warner Bros. cartoons as well. They seem like they're for kids. To me this is really narrow way to judge a game. Games should be judged by how fun they are to play. Not how high you can pile up the dead bodies. Actually I find the opposite to be true. It really seems like the shooters such as Call of Duty, Battlefield, and others are "for kids". Why? Because pointing a gun and shooting is the simplest action you can perform. No context, no predisposition, no thought process is involved. Just point and BANG a dead Nazi/alien/mutant.

Platformers like Crash often have puzzles to solve also, while a shooter is just walking a round a certain place.

Just look at all the environments you go through. Also, and this is a shooter, but Far Cry 3 looks pretty great for any adventure game lover. Set things on fire, move throughought a huge space however you want to. I will agree that games are a lot more action packed these days but its cuz those are easiest to market, and those are selling
While these games do belong to the Action/Adventure Genre they aren't Platform games... The Action/Adventure Genre is a very broad genre that often includes the Stealth, Platform, Shooter and Survival Horror genres among others. MGS4 is a Stealth game and FC3, from what I've seen, looks more like a First Person Shooter game than anything... Video games such as Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (PS2), Ratchet & Clank (PS2) and Crash Bandicoot (PS1) are platform games (in general). Although the genre has been in a steady decline since the 5th generation of video gaming, you can still find the odd title with platform elements such as "jumping from suspended platforms" and whatnot... When you consider a video game genre that is dying out, it appears to be more the Platform Genre than the Action/Adventure Genre!
