General Features

  • Online Feature -- Competition grows with the ability to play online in both the co-op and vs. modes.
  • Unique DBZ Story -- During each battle, find conditions to create new scenes and watch a unique story unfold at the end of each game.
  • Higher Quality Gaming -- Experience visuals and movement reminiscent of the anime due to Z3 shading technology and detailed effects.
  • High Intensity battles -- Increased speed of charge and release on the field, free movement around the field, and increased speed and power of attacks.
  • Energy -- Use of special skills will no longer drain energy. The lower your energy, the stronger you get, making for a possible turnaround of the battle.
  • Fatal Blow -- Each character in the game has their own Fatal Blow. If the player successfully attacks his opponent, this would be a finishing move, but if not, it will put the player in the disadvantageous situation, and he must battle with no Fatal Blow for the rest of the battle.

Overview

From the developers who brought you the first 3 Budokai games for the PS2 and the 2 Shin Budokai games for the PSP, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit is revolutionizing the series by entering the realm of next-generation gaming. Complete with fierce online battles and radical 3D graphic effects, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit will blur the line between videogame and iconic anime series. Jam-packed with graphically enhanced playable characters, realistic battle stages and environments, players can take hold and experience Dragon Ball Z as never before.

During each battle, find conditions to create new dramatic scenes. After the battles, watch a unique story unfold each time you play. There is also a stronger element of offence and defence, due to added energy saving and fighting techniques.

2. Characters

GokuBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630GokuKaiokenBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630GokuSSBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630

Goku is the hero of Dragon Ball Z, the most powerful warrior on Earth. When the Saiyans arrive, Goku learns the mysterious secret of his own past: he is a Saiyan formerly named Kakarot. Goku was sent to Earth as a baby to destroy the planet, but a head injury as a child scrambled Goku's programming. Instead of growing up to become a destructive super-warrior, he became innocent and pure of heart, fighting for good.

Goku is peaceful, good natured, honest, loving to his family and friends, loyal, trustworthy, and brave. If he has a weakness, it is his trusting nature. He always finds the good in people when others don't see it, though Goku's enemies sometimes take advantage of his naive trust.

KidGohanBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630TeenGohanBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630GohanBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630GohanSS2BurstLimit.png picture by Trey630

Named after his adoptive grandfather, Gohan is Goku and Chi-Chi's eldest son. He is idealistic, good, and pure like his father.

With Goku's departure to the next dimension and the eminent arrival of the Saiyans, Gohan is key to the survival of Earth. Thus Piccolo, a former enemy of his father trains Gohan for the upcoming battle. Although initially a wimp, Gohan's training in the wilderness and subsequent fighting make him both brave and loyal.

PiccoloBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630

Goku's one time archenemy, Piccolo is the second strongest being on the Earth. Born as a concentration of Kami's negative spirits, he has powerful energy blasts, can split into two or four separate entities, and has the ability to regenerate limbs. Originally from the far away planet Namek, Piccolo starts off fighting Goku to rule the world. When the Saiyans arrive he joins forces with Goku. At first it is an uneasy alliance, soon enough their bond becomes stronger. While training Gohan, Piccolo develops a special bond with the little boy. Through Gohan, the only person who has ever been a friend to him, Piccolo starts changing for the better.

KrillenBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630

As a young boy, Krillin studied martial arts with Goku under Master Roshi. Originally, he and Goku were fierce rivals, but now they are best friends. A short, bald warrior, loyal Krillin provides comic relief in tense situations as he tries to keep up with Goku and some of the other more powerful warriors. A good fighter on his own accord, he's always there to help Goku. He can and has saved his friend's life more than once. Goku constantly encourages Krillin to have confidence as he learns to be a remarkable fighter.

YamchaBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630

Yamcha is a longtime friend and ally of Goku's, though he was once a notorious bandit. He is sometimes accompanied by Puar, his devoted cat companion. He is anxious and willing to be trained by Kami and join the upcoming battle against the Saiyans. Yamcha and Bulma were once a couple, but eventually Bulma moves on to Vegeta.

TienBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630

Tien is a three-eyed man originally trained by one of Master Roshi's rivals, though he eventually becomes a Z Fighter. He beat Goku at a worldwide martial arts tournament, is able to stop a waterfall with a blast, and can crush rocks on his head. His fighting techniques include the ability to hover in the air, throw concentration bombs, blind with flashes of light, and split into two or four separate entities. Tien is excited about being trained by Kami and willing to fight against the Saiyans despite the odds. He volunteers to be the first to fight against the Saibamen, wins the battle and goes on to fight against the Saiyans. Tien can communicate telepathically with Chiaotzu, his best friend.

TrunksBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630TrunksSSBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630SuperTrunksBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630

Trunks is the son of Bulma - a headstrong, technical genius - and Vegeta - one of the most powerful fighters in the Dragon Ball Z universe. His exact age is not certain, but he first appears in Dragon Ball Z as a teen. He is from the future and has witnessed a threat to Earth which cannot be stopped. He has come back in time to try to save the future Earth, only to find our heroes in Earth facing their own peril.

VegetaBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630VegetaSSBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630SuperVegetaBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630

Vegeta is a powerful Saiyan prince and is one of the most powerful Fighters in the DBZ universe. He and his comrade Nappa are two of the last surviving Saiyans. They come to Earth to destroy all life and sell the planet. Though physically small, Vegeta can power up to unbelievable levels. Ambitious and determined, Vegeta wants the Dragon Balls to gain immortality.

NappaBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630

Nappa arrives on Earth with Vegeta seeking to conquer it. This muscular Saiyan soon gets very involved in vicious battles with Piccolo, Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu. Nappa has more brawn than brain and gets overexcited and careless when fighting.

RaditzBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630

A strong Saiyan warrior, Raditz comes to Earth originally to look for his brother, Goku. Angry and intolerant, Raditz can't understand why it has taken so long for his little brother to destroy the humans. Ruthless like all the Saiyans, he reveals that two even more powerful Saiyans will be coming to Earth in one year in order to destroy it. Unfortunately, his Scouter transmits information about the nature of the Dragon Balls to the Saiyans.

SaibamanBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630

Saibamen are beings grown from seeds for the sole purpose of fighting. They were introduced on Earth by the Saiyans, and take orders from Nappa and Vegeta. With fighting power of 1200 each, the Saibamen are worthy opponents.

FriezaBurstLimit.png picture by Trey630Frieza2ndform.png picture by Trey630Frieza3rdform.png picture by Trey630FriezaFinalform.png picture by Trey630

Frieza100Finalform.png picture by Trey630

Frieza is the main bad guy in the Frieza Saga. He heard of the existence of Dragonballs from his henchman Vegeta, who would later betray him to get the balls for himself. He is known universally for being the man who destroyed the Saiyan home world because he feared they would become too strong and overthrow him. He went to Namek with his squad of henchmen to find the Dragonballs.

Recoome.png picture by Trey630CaptainGinyu.png picture by Trey630

Evil and powerful, the Ginyu Force is hailed as the most powerful team in the universe. It is composed of five members, each one very powerful and possessing unique attacks and fighting advantages. When Dodoria and Zarbon are unable to eliminate our friends and collect the seven Namekian Dragon Balls, Frieza summons the Ginyu Force. Between battles, they enjoy such goofy past times as watching soap operas, playing "paper, rock, scissors" to decide who will fight who, and making bets over chocolate nut bars, their favorite food.

The Ginyu Force strike various poses during their battle. While individually and collectively they are very strong, each member is conceited and competitive which leads to their downfall. They hesitate to ask each other for help because they don't want to share the credit for the victory. The members of the Ginyu force don?t seem to care about each other, willing to stand back and watch while their teammates are destroyed.

Recoome is a big, redheaded brute, possessing great strength but slow in speed.

Captain Ginyu, with purple skin and black horns, is the strongest of the team, and its leader. He has the powerful ability to switch bodies with his opponents. He switches bodies with Goku giving Captain Ginyu the advantage of fighting with Goku's powerful body and also of confusing the team of good guys. This capability does lead to his ultimate demise as he accidentally and forever changes bodies with a frog.

Cell.png picture by Trey630Semi-ImperfectCell.png picture by Trey630PerfectCell.png picture by Trey630

The most dangerous of all Dr. Gero's creations, Cell was created as a genetic experiment. He comes complete with a self-destruct feature, a scorpion-like tail that opens up to absorb the energy of his opponents, and instructions to wreak revenge on the Androids which caused Dr. Gero's downfall. Cell contains the DNA of the mightiest warriors of the universe including Goku, Piccolo and Vegeta. Possessing the DNA of these great warriors, Cell is able to fight with their attacks. With these great forces combined Cell is an almost invincible being. One of his greatest advantages is being able to regenerate at any given time from even the smallest component of himself. He gains power by draining the energy of his enemies using his scorpion-like tail.

Android16.png picture by Trey630Android17.png picture by Trey630Android18.png picture by Trey630

Created by the evil Genius Dr. Gero, Androids 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20 are out to destroy our heroes on Earth. These Androids have amazing strength and enjoy devastation for its sake.

The strong, silent type, Android 16 is an experimental model and is out to destroy whatever he sees.

The most evil of the androids, Android 17 turns on his creator, Dr. Gero, and kicks off his head, and then proceeds to smash it with a swift step. He is unwillingly absorbed by Cell to help Cell reach perfection, and dies when Cell does. He is wished back to life without his self-destruct bomb, which all of the androids possess, including Cell. After being absorbed, he isn't heard from much again until Dragon Ball GT, when he fuses with Artificial Android 17 to become Super 17. At that time, he kills his creator once again. Like I said he is the most evil of all the Androids well maybe besides Cell.

Android 18 is unwillingly absorbed by Cell but is spit out when Super Saiyan 2 Gohan Punches Cell in the stomach. Krillin is in love with her and wishes for the self-destruct bomb within her to be removed. Then they eventually marry and have a daughter named Marron. Android 18 is originally human but is given enhancements that make her into an android. In Trunks future timeline, she and Android 17 are responsible for the death of the Z Senshi and most of humanity.

Bardock.png picture by Trey630

Bardock is a lower class Saiyan soldier who inherits the amazing ability to see into the future. Haunted by visions of his own demise, he launches his son, Goku, into space. Bardock is also the father of Raditz, a Saiyan who desired to destroy Earth.

Broly.png picture by Trey630

With his father's manipulative hand pulling the strings, Broly is unleashed upon an unsuspecting galaxy. Broly desires nothing but total domination over all he surveys and will destroy anyone or anything in his way. Goku vows to stop the rampaging Saiyan before he annihilates another planet, but he may not have the strength. Only time will tell if Broly, the Legendary Super Saiyan, becomes his own worst enemy.

6. Questions and Answers

  • When and where in the DBZ universe does Burst Limit take place?

The storyline goes from the beginning of the Saiyan Saga to the end of the Cell Saga. So basically from the time Radditz arrives on the Earth until Cell is defeated.

  • Can you explain the basics behind fighting mechanics? What other DBZ games is it similar to?

I would definitely compare this title to the Budokai series a couple years back. The combo system and ultimate moves are very easy to pick up and play. But once you start getting into the countering system you'll see it's a very deep fighting game and very twitch based. You need to have really good timing in order to really take advantage of all that Burst Limit has to offer.

  • Besides the main Z Chronicles story mode, what other modes of play can we expect to see?

Well you will have the VS mode which is where the online component is as well. We also have a tutorial section and some extra modes like a survival mode and a couple other unlockable modes I'll let you discover.

  • We've been told that Burst Limit will include international leaderboards, rankings and more. What can you tell us about this?

Well we have a multi-regional online mode set up so you can play people all over the world. This is the first time this has ever happened for a DBZ game, as far as I'm aware, so we are pretty excited about that for sure. This mode will of course track your progress on the leaderboards and rankings systems but as of now that is the only online functionality planned at this point as this was our first try on these systems we didn't want to get too complicated. Definitely look for more next time around!

8. Donny Clay Blogs IGN

Hi There!

I’m Donny Clay, producer at Atari. I work with the DBZ license. A little background on me- I started in the games industry in 1998 in the QA department as a tester and by around 2000 I was managing the test lab. I’ve worked on many games, some of the more popular ones you all may be familiar with include Unreal Tournament, Matrix and Neverwinter Nights. In 2002, Atari acquired the rights to the DBZ video game license. At the time, I was one of the few people at Atari who knew about DBZ, so I picked up the project and have been working on it in some capacity ever since.

Now let’s get down to business! BURST LIMIT!!!!!

8.1 Fighting Roots #1

Dragon Ball Z at its core has always been about the awesome fights and crazy powers the characters have. What better way to recreate that experience on the next-gen systems than through a fighting game? That was the feeling everyone on the team expressed when Burst Limit came into being. The thought was to take the series back to its roots with Dimps (developers of Budokai 1, 2 and 3) and then improve it any way we could. Dimps has always been known for their great fighting systems for DBZ, and Burst Limit is no different. They have taken everything that worked well from previous games and come up with some small but important improvements for this newest entry; Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit. Sound Good?! Good!

8.2 Fighting Roots #2

Hi DBZ Fans,
Thanks for stopping by to read my blog/random ramblings about our new upcoming title Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit!

I figured I’d talk about controls today, after all, Burst Limit is a fighting game and the controls are pretty much what the whole game is about. First off, let me tell you that if you are a button masher, don’t worry, you can still see all the cool stuff like super moves or aura smash attacks and you can string together some pretty sweet combos from just frantic button presses or the light and heavy attacks. All of the Super Moves are done with a very simple directional button press (such as- up, down, left or right) and the Ki button (A button on 360, Circle on the PS3) and you will unleash some pretty sweet-looking Ultimate Attacks if you have enough Ki stored. As I said combos can be strung together by simply using the light or heavy attacks. Throw some Ki blasts in there and you’ve got a pretty respectable fighting style that is easily attainable by anyone who can press the buttons! So as you can see, even if you aren’t a hardcore fighting enthusiast we’ve got you covered.

8.3 Drama Pieces

Hi DBZ Fans,

Another big part of Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit's new gameplay is called the Drama Piece. These are used to give you an edge in battle against your opponents by calling for help from a friend. These helpers can do all sorts of stuff, such as give more health or add to your defense. Some of them can even block incoming attacks, which is great because if you know your opponent’s fighting style you can strategically pick Drama Pieces to interrupt their attacks.

The Drama Pieces are all done with the in-game graphics engine, so they blend in seamlessly with the gameplay, much like the story cinematics. You don't even have to worry about activating them, they will activate as they are needed. For instance, a Drama Piece that grants health will activate once your health goes below a certain level. This way you can focus on the task at hand; pummeling your opponent into dust.

Unlockable Drama Pieces are hidden all over the game so make sure you do some looking around for the best Drama Pieces!

9.1 Stratagyinformer: Burst Limit Interview

Eguchi told us that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions will be developed simultaneously, so both systems will be optimized instead of being a port of the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 version which hopefully is something that all developers will start to do instead of shoddy ports from one system to the other.

Eguichi also told us in that they don't aim to create a “realistic” experience but will be taking a more high quality “anime” approach showing High-end quality Anime-expressions.

He goes on: The game also contains dynamic light source effects which exceed those of the original animation with full use of cell-shaders, color animation, camera lens filter and other techniques. We do not aim to be “realistic”, but to maintain a high quality “anime” style.”

Namco Bandai plan to release Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit before summer

9.2 Japans Release Date

The exit of Dragon Ball Z Burst Limit arrives at great step since Namco Bandai has just announced officially that its title will unload in Japan for June 5, out of Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The European version, always planned for the current of the year, should unload for the last quarter, following the example opus Playstation 2 in their times."

9.3 IGN: Burst Limit Details

Burst Limit is the first entrant into the HD era of gaming for Dragon Ball Z. You've seen the hi-res screenshots but that, as they say, is only the beginning. To learn more, we went to Donny Clay, producer at Atari, for details on the fighting mechanics, number of playable characters and much, much more.

You can read the full interview here

9.4 IGN: Comic Con 08: Burst Limit Progress Report

First things first. I am not a Dragon Ball Z fan. This preview will not be about how Goku's hair featured one too many spikes, or if there was a misplaced tree in one of the environments. To make matters worse, I'm not a fighting game fan either. I've played Street Fighter 2 plenty in my day, a little Dead or Alive 2 and 3, but that's about it. Luckily, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit is one of those fighting games that is somewhat catered to players of my nature. All of those reasons and more are why Burst Limit is my most pleasant surprise for this year's New York Comic-Con.

9.5 IGN: Burst Limit Hands-on

We've taken a few peeks at the progress of the latest in Japanese developer Dimps' surprisingly newbie-friendly brawler: first at GDC a few months ago and then about a week and a half ago. While we were all too happy to run the game through its basic paces, we finally had time to check out the latest build of the title and decided to dig a little deeper into the differences between fighters.

9.6 IGN: DBZ Demo hits the PSN and Xbox MP

A single-player demo of Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit is now available for download on the PlayStation Network and the Xbox Live Marketplace. The download offers two single-player scenarios. You can play Saiyan Arrival, which pits Goku against Raditz and Saibamen Strike, which throws Yamcha at Saibamen.

Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit hits stores in early June.

9.7 IGN: Dragon Ball Z Retrospective

The Dragon Ball Z anime series has always highlighted intense, fast-paced battles between incredibly powerful fighters. Whether they're flying through the air at nearly imperceivable speeds or launching mountain-crushing attacks against an opponent, the characters of the Dragon Ball Z universe always have an interesting battle on their hands. Considering this, videogame adaptations were inevitable and fans of the franchise know that numerous DBZ titles have been produced through the years. With the newest title in the series, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit, on its way to the PlayStation 3 and 360, we asked Donny Clay, Producer at Atari US, to discuss key titles in the series and document just how the franchise has grown.

Glad to see someone made one here. ^_^

Yeah I still don't know which system I'll get the game for. Dimps has always worked with Sony products I might lean towards the PS3 not to mention the free network play. On the other hand I could use the gamer points on my Xbox 360. I might just get both. But either way I want to see more anime titles on both.
