Finished your game and bored with GT3?
Want to get ready for GT4's penalty system?
Want to learn how to be a smooth(er) driver, for up-coming on-line competitions?
Here is one technique (you may know other ways).
Race for 2nd!
Pick any endurance race and race behind the lead car. Using an endurance race is important for its repetitve re-enforcement. Don't pick the fastest car possible, but use one that has just enough capacity to allow you to catch up to the leader, when/if you make a mistake. If you can't stay with the leader after two laps, improve your car. Remember, if it is no challenge, you won't improve as much.
Try to stay an even distance behind the leader, accellerating when it does, braking evenly, too - anticipate changes. Make like you are attached to the lead car and don't pass or touch it, unless the AI is making a stupid error (if that is the case, learn to back off) or you want to practice the pass (tuck in behind the leader again, though). Pit when the leader pits. Sometimes the leader will pit during a late lap - if that is the case, don't pit and practice good driving skills to the finish. On the last lap, pass the leader for the win, so that it won't lower your win ratio and so that it re-enforces doing well (plus the winning purse is larger).
See how close you can stay to the leader, without bumping in to that car. Anticipate the locations where you can pass; practice passing after skills improve. Try to recognise which errors are programmed into the AI; don't mimick them. Pay attention to drafting and how it affects your car's performance. Pay attention to how your car handles vs the AI cars, on each track.
We all know that the AI's technique is flawed, but it does some things right, too. Learn from your experience doing this exercise. See how you can improve your own technique (learn what your own faults are), learn how to capitalise on your opposition's mistakes.
Become a better driver. If you recognise a problem in your driving and if there is a test for a particular section that covers your problem, do the appropriate test(s) again. Try for gold this time.
There is always something to do differently with GT3. There are always ways for you to improve, too. For example, if you have driving partners, do 2-player or iLink races. Help each other get better.
Use this thread to list your experiences and what you learn.
Make your car suggestions per race, too.
Cheers and have fun while getting better,

I do that in NASCAR THUNDER 2004 and it works real well. I try to do it in GT3 at the endurance races but the cars go too slow so I just win by 5 laps driving "passively" but hopefully the AI in GT4 is smart enough to recognize how fast the player is and tries to speed up the AI cars to keep pace or maybe go a little faster. The competitiveness of the car is not all important. It's the skill of the driver behind the wheel that matters most.
