I had a lockup problem with the 80gig model (CECHE01). I was maybe ~3 hours into the game when i started getting a lockup. It happened three times, 2x at the map screen and another time while walking down the street. I was able to remove the problem by deleting installed game data (not the saved games) and reinstalling. I suspect however the problem will come back.

im running the game on a 60gb day one machine and i am having similar issues:

 

i am playing the game now for about 9 hours within the last three days and the game didnt freeze - until now. while playing the game did freeze 3 times now within the last 15  minutes. the issues didnt appear after a cutscene or something but suddenly during gameplay. the first time after around 10 minutes of platime, the after 2 and 

 

dont know what to do now. it **bleep**in sucks!!

I too am a 60G PS3 owner... No problems!!! Thank god!!! Been in romans, watched HELLA TV. Just for laughs... Now I am out rollin around and just left meeting roman again. No probs so far.

i have the 40gb,  and i have the exact same problems freezes in video and in game,   and whats this crap with no menu before the game loads, and the game is really dark,  and IT FREEZES!

you go to the game list on the XMB and then you go to game data utility (not save) you should see a GTAIV file about 3gigs big, delete and then play the game should start to install like the 1st time.

I am also a launch 60 gig owner, it froze twice right when Niko gets to the top of the boat in the opening scene, once right after when you see the car. Skipped the intro, it froze when we got out of the car and tried to get back in. Trying to delete all game info and re-installing now. Update to come. For those needing to know, go to "Game save utility" delete your GTA4 game save. The other one (the 3.3Gig install) is in "Game data utility" Delete that one as well. Both options are right above your GTA4 "Game Select" in the XMB

ok to make the game brighter press start then go to display. Take brightness up 1-2, take contrast up 1-2 and then take satutation up 1. Should make the game see able.

I have been waiting too long to NOT be able to play this game!  I am about to go buy another PS3 because I want a 2nd Blu-Ray player for upstairs, but if you are saying the 40GB locks up also, maybe the problem is a bad batch of media.  I am in KY - purchased from Game Stop, where else are the problem discs being bought and found?  Maybe there is some correlation to a certain distributor!
