This is true. The problem is that USB1.1 is slower than the DVD drive - and one of the main purposes of storing anything ('backups' or things like FFXI) on the HDD was to cut loading times.

Hey, if you had to plug something in the USB. How would you get your internet wire in there?

all usb devices would work on a 1.0 port...
USB 2.0 is compatible with USB 1.0 ports.... you just won't get
2.0 speeds, the 2.0 device will operate at 1.0 speeds in these cases.
and you can plug in a usb 1.0 device into a usb 2.0 port... and it will operate at the speed the 1.0 usb device can handle

Let me clear up some of the stupid comments made here.
the first one being
-----You can't add the hdd to the slim ps2. as for the usb hdd you can't use them either because they support usb2.0 and the ps2 supports 1.0----
ok learn something about computers before you speak again.. usb is backwards compatible!!! 2.0 works with 1.1 devices... and its 1.1 not 1.0
and the next item
----The problem is that USB1.1 is slower than the DVD drive - and one of the main purposes of storing anything ('backups' or things like FFXI) on the HDD was to cut loading times. ----
usb 1.1 runs at 12mb per sec.. as where the ps2 runs a dvd drive so your going to get at best 7mb/s but i bet it is a bit slower then that..
now if you connect 2 devices via usb on that 1.1 that the ps2 has then the 12mb is split to 6mb on the first and 6mb on the 2ed.. that would be the only slow down... 12mb per sec is still crazy fast... think of it like this
high speed internet is usualy connected at 4.0mb per sec.. and you can download large files in no time flat
the hard drive was created for downloading updates to games BTW not so much load time.. that was just a +

Yes. There is a HDD for the Slim Playstation 2, but it's not available here in North America. If you live in Asia, you could get it there.
