So far the official announcement made from Konami is Quarter 1 of the fiscal year 2007.  Which is somewhere between January and April of 2007.  Akira Yamaoka has confirmed the game is already completed, therefore I doubt it will take another full year to release.

Again, official statement from Konami is Q1 2007.  No need to panic yet. Thanks.

It has nothing to do with patience. It's all to do with me being a fan of Silent Hill and wanting to inform people of the latest game in development. Nothing else to it really.

As for the user above who posted with release dates in December, when a site has "December 31st", that date is always a place holder. It's never the official date.

Where the hell is this game? I'd think by now they would have at least let everyone know the release date.  I also found it weird that they stopped sending out the monthly newsletter about its progress...

I bought my PSP for this game, and I want it now...:smileysad:

There were rumours going around that the game might be canned yet the rumour was debunked by a developer from Climax Studios. All he said was that the game is still scheduled to be released early this year.

NEWS

Not that this confirms anything, but PSM3 have, once again, the release date for Silent Hill: Origins in the UK as February 2007. Hmm, theres still not other news other than that about the release, and PLAY.com still have the release as Q42007, which is probably made up. Also Amazon.co.uk have not listing for Silent Hill: Origins at all...

PSM3 have also added Silent Hill 5 to their "PSM3 2007 Wishlist", writing this caption about it:

"Series composer Akira Yamamoka has hinted that the next installment might explore familiar locations 'gone wrong'. He has also said that gameplay will return to the psychological torture of episodes one and two."

Just thought you guys would like to know. :smileyhappy:

Again, thanks to SilentHill0rigins.com for providing this information.

I remember there being information on what Silent Hill 5 will be like. I'll be over the moon if its like the first two games.

They were by far the best. Silent Hill 2 being my top favorite.

Team Silent has no hand in the game's development but they have written the story themselves.

Storyline

"Silent Hill Origins tells the tale of a solitary truck driver stuck in the terrifying town while making a routine delivery. New gameplay elements, such as a barricade system that lets players block off rooms from enemies, and an enhanced camera system deliver an added sense of isolation and anxiety in this frightening adventure."

E3 2006: Silent Hill Origins
We explore the history of the most twisted town in gaming.
by Jeff Haynes

May 9, 2006 - The Silent Hill franchise literally reinvented survival horror, where the true monster that wasn't necessarily the grotesque creatures that came at you on the screen, but the entire town that you found yourself in. The town of Silent Hill felt alive and malevolent, which added to the tension whenever your surroundings went from something familiar to the extremely strange. Now the place you would never want to visit is revisiting its roots as it leaps from consoles to the PSP with Silent Hill Origins.

We got a chance to take a look at this original tale, which reveals the history about what turned Silent Hill into such an incredibly twisted town to begin with. The story will center around a lone truck driver who's in the middle of a routine delivery and finds himself trapped in the city limits. Unfortunately, this man has an extremely troubled past, and as we discovered, had severe hallucinations and delusional episodes. As the town begins its descent into the madness that grips its streets and buildings, the player will be forced to confront these hallucinations as well as the strange monsters that inhabit Silent Hill.

Konami has gone out of its way to redefine the series to take advantage of the PSP, particularly with a new gameplay feature called the Barricade System. In previous Silent Hill titles, you essentially had to fight or flee, as there wasn't really a way to avoid pursuing monsters. With the Barricade System, you have the option to manipulate the environment, pushing furniture, scattered debris and other objects together to create obstacles that will impede their progress, giving you a little bit of sanctuary from the beasts for a short while.

We also gained some clues into the horror that the main character may have to come to grips with. Many of the images that we obtained show a number of hospital scenes, which seems to indicate at least a period of institutionalization when he was younger. It would also appear that the town seems to be feeding off of these traumatic memories, as a number of the monsters seem influenced by the mentally ill or infirmed. One creature appeared as if it was in a straightjacket, while another seemed fused to an off-kilter wheelchair.

With new control and combat schemes, as well as a new camera that's been specifically optimized for the PSP's button layout and a musical score by series composer Akira Yamaoka, Silent Hill Origins will be coming out next year. We'll have more details on this portable fright fest soon, but for now, check out some of these screens.

E3 2006: Silent Hill Origins Explored
We go deeper into the history of Silent Hill.
by Jeff Haynes

May 9, 2006 - Konami introduced journalists to the latest chapter of their survival horror franchise, Silent Hill Origins, at their press conference today. The introduction started with a movie montage that encompassed the four titles on the consoles, showing the main characters of those titles as they went through their experience of Silent Hill. It quickly shifted to the main character of Origins, a truck driver named Travis O'Grady, as he drove down the road. Without explanation, the camera then shifted to a character walking down a long hallway in an old manor. Inexplicable images flashed quickly, such as odd fleshy orbs in a sink, rusty meat hooks hanging and other trademark scenes of the twisted side of the town of Silent Hill.

The trailer quickly descended into a chaotic frenzy of images, punctuated by music that slowed down and sped up at different intervals that gave a sense of instability to the entire trailer, but conveyed that something was definitely wrong with what you were watching. Odd figures cast their gnarled shadows on walls. Warped armless figures, which veterans of the Silent Hill series would recognize, twitched and shivered in pale pools of light. Large beasts without faces or heads hung on meat hooks. The immediate inference was that there were plenty of creatures coming out of the darkest corners of the town to grab at Travis, which was quickly confirmed by a shot of his deserted eighteen wheeler surrounded by shadowy figures that enveloped the truck. It was then swallowed by fog, which implied that the trucker had been completely absorbed by the town itself.

It didn't help that some of the next shots featured Travis staring into a mirror in a trashed restroom, only to find the mirror rip apart, as if something was trying to crawl out of it. The trailer then showed a number of the monsters that we'd seen before, such as the creature in a straightjacket stumbling his way through a dimly lit area and even the hint of the wheelchair beast. At least, it was the hint of the wheelchair creature, as only the chair could be seen dragged slowly into the shadow, making a loud scraping noise across the tile floor.

We were informed that as an origin story of the franchise, the game will not fully answer all of the questions for the series, but it will give the franchise a full historical context. For instance, it explains how Alessa inflected her rage upon the town of Silent Hill, as well as the role The Order plays in its tortured state. We were also told that old characters such as Dahlia, Dr. Kaufman and Alessa are just some of the characters that are making a return to the title.

There was also a lot of attention placed on newer camera placement that has been redone to better suit the PSP's smaller screen. This provides players with much better situational awareness, something that implied that you'd need to know what was happening at all times. There was also the announcement on a new "cineractive" system that would capture key gameplay moments and scenarios, providing Travis with completely new commands, attacks and dodges. These cineractive moments were likened to those high intensity moments in film, and promised a new way to get players involved in the suspense of the game. Silent Hill Origins is scheduled to be released this Winter, but we'll have more details from the show floor.

E3 '06: Silent Hill Origins First Impressions
We check out the upcoming PSP prequel that shows off how Silent Hill became such a freaky place.
By Ricardo Torres, GameSpot

LOS ANGELES--At Konami's press conference today, the Japanese developer unveiled a trailer for the tentatively named Silent Hill Origins. The PlayStation Portable game is an original game set prior to the first Silent Hill game when, presumably, the town was less creepy and fatal to newcomers. Though there weren't many details given out, what was made known certainly sounds like a Silent Hill game.

The game will follow the adventures of Travis O'Grady, a truck driver who winds up hitting town and getting sucked into local weirdness while on a routine delivery. He discovers pretty quickly that the locals "aint quite right." To make matters more complicated, he'll have to deal with the hallucinations that have plagued him since childhood. From the sounds of it, the luckless truck driver will be hauling ass to get to his truck and get out of town before something horrible happens. Although, if you're familiar with the Silent Hill series, it's pretty much a given that some messed-up stuff will go down before the game is over.

In its press materials and presentation on the game, Konami mentioned a number of different elements to look out for. New visual effects are being implemented in the game. A new "barricade" system will let you block off rooms from enemies, which should make avoiding the insane critters that are intent on killing Travis interesting. The game will feature a camera system designed specifically for the handheld experience. The same holds true for the control scheme, which is being tailored for the PSP. The game will also feature an original soundtrack by series composer Akira Yamaoka.

Silent Hill Origins is slated to ship in 2007. Look for more on the game in the coming weeks.

1UP - E3 2006 Opinions:

What's the game about: Scaring the hell out of players on the go, finally getting into some of the reasons that Silent Hill has turned out to be such a thoroughly nasty place. A lonely trucker is captured by Silent Hill's malevolent forces, and struggles to return to his truck and escape them.

What's new for E3: We get to meet Travis O'Grady, the aforementioned trucker, and see a whole lot of the badness that's waiting for him. There are interesting links between O'Grady and the protagonists from other Silent Hill games, and a shot of him staring contemplatively into a bathroom sink's mirror before it "shatters" into lines of white light -- that break into his truck's headlights.

What we like: Silent Hill is in some respects a great fit for the PSP -- imagine playing it huddled alone in bed in the dark or on a long ride. The graphics look pitch-perfect for the game's scare factor, and the producer promises that the camera system and control scheme for the PSP will be comparable to those in the console versions. The game will also make full use of a "Cineractive" system, where certain situations make buttons contextual -- it sounds a lot like Resident Evil 4's cut-scene controls, but the only example we've heard so far is using it for combat. That could be a very cool way to handle combat and horror on a PSP title.

What we dislike: Silent Hill is a terrible franchise to play for just a few minutes at a time, so the PSP format may pose some difficulties in that respect. Also, we've seen too many PSP titles ruined by shabby control schemes, and the Silent Hill series has never been very wieldy to begin with.

IGN - Silent Hill Origins Hands On
Portable scary done right? Looks like it!
by Jeremy Dunham

August 23, 2006 - Konami today revealed a playable version of its upcoming PSP horror, Silent Hill Origins, which marked the first time the title was available for firsthand impressions since debuting at E3. The game looked absolutely dazzling too, wowing us with a visual presentation that most PS2 software still hasn't achieved. In fact, Silent Hill Origins' graphical detail is so well-crafted that even the most subtle things -- things you'll probably never even see through the darkness -- have been rendered in some fashion or another (down to the individual cracks in the walls) and the signature Silent Hill fog looks appropriately ominous and realistic.

Played from the RE4 perspective and heavier on action compared to previous iterations, Origins is still a Silent Hill game in every sense of the word. That means that yes, the storyline still takes center stage and figuring out how to get the hell out of Dodge without losing your soul is still the primary goal. In the build we demoed, however, it was the town itself that Konami wanted to focus on. A good 30% of the environments here have been recreated from the original's PlayStation One days and the artists have done a good job of making it feel both familiar and new at the same time.

Now as any fan of the Silent Hill series knows, there's a whole lot more to the game than just its visuals. If you're a fan of brutal monster-crushing weapons, then the PSP iteration should have plenty for you. Six completely different items (broken into two categories) can be used to kill the indescribable things that populate the haunted town. The sledgehammer, shovel, and tire iron make up the melee arsenal, while the laser-sighted 9mm, 44 magnum, and traditional shotgun make up the ranged weapon set. Our personal favorite is the sledgehammer, though. One quick swing of the handle results in some major, gooey creature damage that begs to be done over, and over, and over again.

The one big gripe we have with the game thus far (and granted it is early) is that the controls are a little sluggish. Somewhat on the mechanical side, the movement of "Mr. Trucker Guy" falls victim to the same stiff response that most third-person actioners suffer from in their youngling stages. Konami tells us that there's still a boat load of optimization left to do with Silent Hill Origins, though, so to fault it too much so soon probably wouldn't be right.

Hopefully we'll get more time with the game over the next couple of months (it isn't due out until 2007), but in the meantime our readers should definitely check out our media page below for movies and screens from the latest version, and follow this link to view our two previous (and very extensive) previews.
