Hi folks,
 
I have been asked by our Design Lead to get some feedback on what you felt worked well with the grenades in Killzone 1 online AND campaign.
 
I know that grenade killing became much too wide-spread and people would pin it as they knew they were about to die to try and get some more kills.  I also think that the player got too many grenades, but I wanted to know from you guys, the real experts, what you though.  So let me know what you thought of the...
 
Throwing mechanic.  Did you like the arc of throwing.  Do you find it easy to get the grenade to where you want it to land. 
Damage.   Too much damage?  Too little?  How did you feel the spread was the area that would receive damage?
Amount.   Should you be spawned with grenades?  If so how many?  If not how many should be in a pick-up?  Or should every single grenade be a single pick-up?
Anything else?  Anything else you would like to mention in regard to the grenades?  Go ahead.
 
So folks, we would appreciate it if you gave us some feedback.  Think of it as a post-mortum evaluation of the grenades and please do not use this discussion as a forum for flaming.  Everyones opinion counts here.  (And please don't just say "Why don't you use Game 'X's mechanic?")

I certainly use ALOT more grenades online than in campaign due to the quick fast paced "kill or be killed" nature of online. Also, i don't care that much about the suicide killers. A player should be better with the gun and evasive moves to exterminate the suicide bomber before he enters your area. I don't have much to pick apart as far as grenades, so:

Arc: Takes a bit of practice but once there, the grenades can be very accurate. So, satisfied with how they are in KZ1 (lol KZ1!)

Damage Area: Just fine as far as I'm concerned. They are GRENADES for crying out loud, they KILL.

Spawn: Yes, definitly. Spawn with one or two less than what we have now. And ammo spawns should be 1 or 2 less as well.

Other: I added this to the suggestion list. But allow other players (online) to hear the 'ticking' grenade that a recently killed player is holding. I mean, it's standard to not linger for a few seconds around your kill, but still... hearing a ticking could be helpful.

Here's my feedback:

I found that the throwing mechanics were just right. It just feels so natural without hindering the fun facter of the game. Throwing grenades into windows/other high places requires a bit of calculation but I enjoyed that aspect of it.

Damage....hmm that's a tricky one. While in the campaign I noticed that the Helghast with higher status tend to be immune to a grenade's damage. I found it a bit annoying. I don't care how much armor they have on, a grenade will still mess you up. As for online I liked the splash damage. My only problem was that the hit detection was a bit spotty at times.

Ahhh yes the magical question about the amount. I watched the game go from Killzone to Grenadezone over the year :smileysad: . My humble opinion is to limit users to 2 grenades at spawn and leave it at a 2 grenade capacity.

Another grenade suggestion that comes off the top of my head is to have the grenades create a slightly bigger ploom after explosion(in dirt). Right now it just seems like someone is dusting an old rug when they go off. I love the splash effect the water makes when a grenade goes off...similar details in sand/dirt would be nice to see.

The throwing mechanics are right on.  Very easy to use, and easy to be come accurate with...as most of us know. :smileywink:

Damage...well...that depends...the damage they're supposed to cause is good... :smileysurprised:

I'm with Clinton on this one.  Spawn with 2 grenades, and don't have them lying around everywhere.  Maybe 1 reload of 2 grenades for each side.

I love the ability to cook the grenades.  Having them on a timer as opposed to having them be impact detonated is a very nice feature.  Although, it would be nice to have an option, or different type of grenade that does detonate on impact would be very cool.

Yeah, throwing is fine, works good.
 
Damage: More splash damage the blasts are a bit too small. Maybe more damage at the center of the explosion, but less the further you get from the center.
 
 
Limit the number to 2 grenades, max. So people don't go wasting them.

The throwing of the gernade is just right. Once u get good wit it u can through it anywhere and get it where u want it to go.

I think u should only get 1 or 2 gernades when u respawn. And i like what that one dude said u should be able to hear what ticking of the grenade on the ground. That would be pretty cool.

Mechanic - The arc was OK, not perfect...I can't explain how it could be fixed, but it could some...I noticed that it seemed like you threw it WAY to slow...Halo throws it too fast...so, if if was thrown just a bit faster, it'd feel just right. And I dont think the "fuse" should be so slow. Maybe one less "beep" before exploding? Also, there could be physics on the grenades...usually you throw them and they just stick on the ground...they should bounce a bit more...

Damage - One thing I liked was how you implemented a type of shrapnel type damage system. The damage was about right, but maybe too powerful from too far away. The one-hit-kill type thing is OK, but sometimes it seems like it kills from too far away.

Amount - too many grenades, yeah. It kinda defeats the purpose of guns

Just find a way that grenades aren't overpowering, like they are currently, and that you need to use them more strategically...yeah.

I thought the hand grenades in Killzone where great, the best I've seen in any video game. They were hard to throw at first, but with a little practice, you can throw them through windows. :smileyhappy:

I wouldn't change a thing. If they have shorter fuses, they'll explode before the end of a long throw. The damage is just right. The only fault I saw was occasionally the hit detection, especially for airbursts.

I think the current amounts are just right too, they are an important part of the game. But I would like other types of grenades like smoke and tear gas. And also flares if there are any dark maps.

There were complaints about too much explosives in Killzone, but if the maps are bigger in Killzone 2 then the current amount of explosives should be just right. Just fix the bullet hit detection.

The throwing arch was perfect-easy to get it where you want it to go, dont change it!

However the amount of nades you start of with and can have is simply rediculous. You wonder why explosives are overused (besides being placed in every room, and having half of the guns have some sort of explosive attachement on it) its that the player starts off with three grenades!

With that many, who cares about thinking when to use them? Just prime one up and throw it at someones feet-no skill required. And if you dont see anybody there to throw it at, you dont even have to kill yourself, you can just switch your gun and it will magically be back to normal. Not to mention that you have the ability to pick up FIVE extra grenades.
