Yeah they got swept by the Rangers and then swept by somebody else. I might update a few more times today if I feel like it. I've done a lot today.

Well when you sign them, it gives you their attributes and it fills out their player card. Garza's velocity is insane. I was 16th in the draft.. I went 82-80 last year so yeah I was right about in the middle of the MLB standings.

Series vs. Baltimore Orioles A's Complete Sweep Behind Great Pitching By: J.D. Weeks June 2nd, 2011 -- BALTIMORE, MD -- The A's gained extremely valuable ground on the Rangers with a sweep of the Orioles, who they also won a series against just last week. The sweep brings the A's to just one and a half games back of the lead. The offensive outburst in game one was led by a nine run fifth inning, in which Dennis Sarfate was tagged for seven runs in an inning of work. Brad Hennessey also allowed two runs in this inning, making it the most runs scored in an inning of any inning this year by any team. All of this was done without a single home run. The small ball was extremely effective in this game as you can see. David DeJesus, Nate McLouth, Mike Moustakas (2), Clarence Goldsmith, and Ryan Sweeney all doubled in the game, while DeJesus (3), McLouth (4), Moustakas (3), Goldsmith (2), Orlando Cabrera, Sweeney (2), and Emmanuel Burriss all had RBI's in the game. Erik Bedard was actually very good in this blowout, allowing two runs in six innings. Whether Bedard can come back from where he was at to begin the season is a big question whose answer will play a big part in the fate of the A's. Kelvim Escobar
Kelvim Escobar was once again fantastic, this time in game two. He completed another shut out, this time through eight innings, and he allowed just four hits. Brad Ziegler pitched a low-stress ninth inning, but failed to shut the Orioles down, and ended up allowing two runs in that inning. Once again, it was pretty much all small ball in the game. Aside from a two run homer by Emmanuel Burriss, all the runs were scored in other methods. Moustakas, Goldsmith (2), Cabrera (2), Cust, and Sweeney all also drove in runs. Game three featured Jonathan Sanchez, and you already know how this one turned out. Sanchez allowed just one run in six+ innings, improving his record to 6-2 and lowering his ERA to 2.62. Mark Lowe, Henry Rodriguez, and Joey Devine all pitched relief work to finish the game. Mike Moustakas homered again, and Ryan Sweeney drove in a run. It was another big game on the bases, as the A's stole another five bags. Burriss had two, DeJesus had two, and Sweeney had one. The team now has 80 stolen bases as a team, 35 more than the Twins. Five of the top thirteen base stealers in the A.L. are on the A's, and Emmanuel Burriss leads all of baseball with his 23. It's funny that a team goes from never stealing to easily the fastest team in the league. It's certainly correlated into wins. The A's will now visit Toronto for a three game series, and then come home for a tough three game series against the Yankees.

Series vs. Toronto Blue Jays A's Keep Rolling in Sweep
By: J.D. Weeks June 4th, 2011 -- TORONTO, ONTARIO -- The A's are absolutely on fire right now, and they've won seven in a row to take control on the A.L. West for the first time since mid-2010. The pitching and batting are coming through in tandems to provide an unbeatable force right now. Dana Eveland
Recently called up Dana Eveland made his first start in game one, and he was much better than Trevor Cahill. He allowed just one run in his debut over six+ innings. Eveland already has as many wins as Cahill in 2011. I think Eveland is the answer as a number three starter. Mark Lowe, Brad Ziegler, and Joey Devine pitched in relief, not allowing a single hit in their two+ relief innings. Lowe and Ziegler each got a hold, and Devine a save. For Devine, it's save number six, and he's six of seven since being promoted to the closer. After the one blown save, he's a perfect six for six and his ERA has dropped to 2.01. Two solo homers by Jack Cust and Clarence Goldsmith provided two of the three runs scored, the other one coming from a Nolan Reimold single. Some decent pitching and better batting resulted in win number two in game two. Jordan Walden was the starter, and he was overall solid. He allowed just three runs in seven innings, although he suffered ten hits. Nevertheless, the bullpen shut the Jays down again, and Devine got another save. It was a huge game in terms of long balls. Orlando Cabrera, Jason Giambi, and Jack Cust all homered, with Cust homering twice in the game. A five run third inning was key to the outcome of the game, with the A's scoring these runs off Jesse Litsch, who the they forced to exit after just two+ innings. Jack Cust
Erik Bedard returned to his native land of Canada to start in game three. He was very good, well at least better than he's been in previous starts, getting the win and holding the Jays to two runs in six innings. He's still just 3-4 with a 5.05 ERA, but he's looked rather impressive his last few starts. Lowe, Ziegler, and Devine again pitched the relief innings this time. Once again, Lowe and Ziegler got holds while Devine got the save. For Devine, it was his third of the series in as many games and his eighth on the season. The ERA keeps on dipping, now at 1.84. His success is huge to the ball club, who was losing games along with morale when Brad Ziegler was the closer. Nate McLouth homered in the win, while Mike Moustakas doubled twice. Emmanuel Burriss also drove in a pair with a single in the fourth, and Jason Giambi accounted for the last run with an RBI single of his own. The A's just keep on rollin', although they've been playing weak competition. Nevertheless, a sweep is a sweep, and three games more in the standings is three games more. Now they'll have to play the Yankees, Cubs, Dodgers, and Rockies all this month still, but series with the Diamondbacks, Padres, and Mariners even it out.

Series vs. New York Yankees A's Nearly Sweep Yankees
By: J.D. Weeks June 9th, 2011 -- EMERYVILLE, CA -- The A's are just dominating right now, winning thirteen of their last sixteen. The pitching has been phenomenal and players like Nate McLouth and Mike Moustakas have really stepped up. Nate McLouth
Kelvim Escobar had another great starts in game one, pitching six+ critical innings against the Yankees and holding them to just one run on six hits. His ERA is continuously falling with each start, coming all the way down from six+ to 3.83. Maybe the story of the game was Mike Antonini. Starting the year in AAA, Antonini got an opportunity with the demotion of Trevor Cahill and has certainly made the most of his role in the bullpen. He pitched five+ scoreless relief innings, getting the A's from the seventh inning all the way to extras in the twelfth. He allowed just two hits and just those two as baserunners, and got the win. Moustakas and McLouth, who pinch hit, each had RBI's to provide the minimal production needed. A.J. Burnett was tough, but a great effort by the pitching led to an eventual win. Game two could've easily been won. Jonathan Sanchez was the starter, and his five innings, three run performance was enough to get by. Rafael Perez continued the great series bullpen effort by pitching three scoreless relief innings. However, it was Joey Devine, who'd been the most dependable reliever all year, who was the weak one. Devine allowed four runs in just a third of an inning, raising his ERA to 3.28, giving up a second blown save, and raising his loss total to one. Ryan Sweeney homered in the game, providing one of few homers in the series. McLouth had two RBI's, Cust two, and Cabrera one. Game two featured the most offense by the A's in the whole series, and ironically led to a loss. Dana Eveland
Dana Eveland made his second start in game three and I think unanimously solidified his rotation spot. His sixth and two thirds innings shutout against the Yankees is not only impressive, but a rare thing to do and got him his second win in as many starts. He held the bombers to two hits, a team that has one of the most feared lineups in the game. Remember that Eveland isn't some AAA scrub called up for injury, Eveland was fantastic in '10 and '09 and had a 10-0 start last year. Once again the bats were silent, but were enough to pick up the win behind the fantastic pitching. RBI's from Clarence Goldsmith and Ryan Sweeney gave the A's two runs in the game off Joba Chamberlain, and somehow they went as the winning runs. Another guy who was impressive was Jordan Walden, who started game four. The young rookie also held the Yanks to just one run in five+ innings. The start was huge in a game that would lead to either a three-one series win or a series tie. Mike Antonini pitched one+ innings and gave up a pair of runs, but the good offensive game and Walden's good start made his runs not matter. Rafael Perez and Brad Ziegler pitched two scoreless innings two end the game. Mike Moustakas homered and drove in three, the big dog in a big offensive game. Giambi, McLouth, Reimold, Sweeney, and Ellis all also had RBI's, providing a joint effort to close of the tough Yankees and escape with a series win. An impressive series brings up questions whether the A's can keep up this hot streak and beat other top dogs.

Series vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Good All-Around Effort Leads to Series Win
By: J.D. Weeks June 12th, 2011 -- EMERYVILLE, CA -- A rough start at the beginning of the season was certainly not a foreshadow into the rest of the season. Since the bad stretch to open the season, the A's have been on fire ever since, claiming first place and distancing themselves further and further away every week. Dan Haren
Game one of the Diamondbacks series was very well pitched by Dan Haren of Arizona. He held the A's to one run in eight innings, making it difficult for Erik Bedard to counter. Bedard allowed two runs in four+ innings, despite giving up eight hits, he limited damage in the game. Phillipe Aumont pitched a solid three+ innings of relief, and he allowed just one run on two hits. Mark Lowe also pitched a scoreless inning, but the pitching of Haren really stopped the A's from ever getting started. Nolan Reimold's solo homer off Haren in the fifth was the only run produced in the game, despite eight hits and many opportunities with runners in scoring position. Kelvim Escobar was pretty good in game two, allowing just two runs despite ten hits in six+ innings. Henry Rodriguez pitched one relief inning, and allowed a pair of runs on a hit and a walk, bringing his ERA up to 11.57 is his limited MLB time. After the game, Rodriguez was demoted to AAA in favor of Chris Ray, who was pitching very well there. Rafael Perez pitched two+ scoreless innings in relief of Rodriguez, and was rewarded after a walkoff single from Jack Cust in the top of the tenth. Jack Cust
Cust finished the game with just that one hit, but provided a critical RBI. Jason Giambi homered in the first off Max Scherzer, giving the A's an early lead and a jumpstart to the offense. Emmanuel Burriss also tripled and brought in a run. The A's got another big first inning in game three. Facing Jon Garland, Orlando Cabrera and Jack Cust each had RBI singles, while Jason Giambi and Nate McLouth each had solo homers. All of this in the first inning. Clarence Goldsmith also finished with an RBI, and Cust drove in another run in the fifth. Jonathan Sanchez was the starter, and had another great start. Although he allowed three runs in six+ innings, his start got the A's deep into the game and was enough for the offense to hold the lead. The win for Sanchez is number six and the seven strikeouts now make his third in the A.L. in K's with 84. Mike Antonini, Brad Ziegler, and Joey Devine all had scoreless appearances to finish the game. Antonini and Ziegler each got holds, while Devine got save number nine. The A's will now face the Cubs at home. Remember that the last time the A's played them, they were swept by the Cubs. Another sweep here could be disastrous.

Series vs. Chicago Cubs Eveland Still Nearly Perfect in Series Win
By: J.D. Weeks June 16th, 2011 -- EMERYVILLE, CA -- Not only has Oakland rebounded from a terrible start and is now winning games, but they're winning against top notch competition. A 3-1 series win against the Yankees and now a 2-1 series win against the Cubs has shown that this is more than just a mediocre, .500 team. We all knew that Dana Eveland would be in the bigs sometime this season. Whether it was to begin the season, to replace an injured player, or pitch in September, we all knew he'd be here at some point. However, I don't think anybody predicted him to allow one run in his first twenty+ innings and allow less than one hit or walk per inning. This guy is just defying all odds and proving everybody wrong. The fact that his fastball tops out at 91 mph certainly doesn't phase him, for his ability to control games with his frequent changes of pace and his ability to work all sides of the plate cover the rest. Dana Eveland
In game one, Eveland shut out the Cubs through seven innings, allowing eight hits and striking out five. Shutting out a lineup of Jeter, Bradley, Ramirez, Lee, Soto, Soriano, and Jacobs is one hell of a feat, accomplished by a guy who didn't even make the MLB roster out of Spring Training. The way this guy is pitching, I wouldn't be surprised to see him finish the year leading the league in five categories if he gets enough innings. In the preliminary all-star voting, Eveland already has 120K votes. One guy who hasn't had much success is Brad Ziegler. In relief of Eveland, Ziegler allowed RBIs to Mike Fontenot and Mike Jacobs in the top of the 9th, almost allowing a rally to begin and take place. Although he got out of the inning, it's not a good sign to see him allowing as many baserunners as he did. If Ziegler can't perform like he has in previous years, he could see himself being either demoted or even traded for another bat. He's been placed in low-stress, high-reward situations and hasn't taken advantage. His ERA is currently at 5.54, and you know that Bob Geren doesn't like high bullpen ERA's. Orlando Cabrera and Emmanuel Burriss each homered, while Mike Moustakas and Nate McLouth each drove in runs. Ted Lilly was strong in his six innings for Chicago, but the bullpen, which allowed four runs in the 7th and 8th innings, was critical to why the A's were able to win this game. Another guy who has virtually come out of nowhere is Jordan Walden. Before game two, Walden had been a very reliable number five starter who gave a good outing mostly every night, but here he had some troubles early on. Walden allowed six runs total in less than three innings, five of those runs coming in the second inning. He allowed a two-run single to Mike Fontenot and a three-run homer to Milton Bradley in that second inning. In the third, he then allowed a solo homer to Mike Jacobs. That was it for Walden. The bullpen was very strong in relief of Walden, but the scoreless six+ innings pitched by Phillipe Aumont and Chris Ray were put to waste. Chicago starter Jeff Samardzija, former Notre Dame wide receiver on the football squad, was tough for Oakland. They could only get three runs off him after seven, and by that time they were already down by six. Nate McLouth homered, giving him eleven for the season. Orlando Cabrera drove in a run off Samardzija, soon enough followed by a two-run double by Jason Giambi. All four of the A's runs came in the eighth, three coming off Samardzija and one coming off reliever Scot Shields. In game three, Erik Bedard was particularly strong for the A's after a tough outing for Walden. Bedard held the Cubs to three runs in six innings, qualifying the Canadian for a quality start and another win, number four. He continues to improve after a rough start to the season, and that is a terrific sign for the pitching of the A's. Mike Antonini
Mike Antonini got the relief duty, and didn't fail to impress. His three scoreless relief innings were rewarded with a three-inning save for Antonini, who has becoming known for his long relief stints in which he simply shuts down an offense. The one base runner he allowed was quickly removed after a quick two outs to get out of the jam. Antonini has proven himself as a reliable pitcher in big situations, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him get spot starts or join the rotation if someone was to be injured. With Bedard, Escobar, and Eveland having careers plagued with injuries, it wouldn't be surprising to see one of them go down.
Jason Giambi had a big game, going 2-5 with a three run homer in the first after DeJesus and Moustakas got on base. Burriss, DeJesus, Cabrera, and Reimold all also had RBI's in the win. Another tough N.L. opponent will be in this tough June schedule for the A's. They will have to travel into Los Angeles and face the N.L. West leading Dodgers in a three game series. The matchups look like this: Game One - Escobar (3-3, 3.74 ERA) vs. Billingsley (7-3, 2.79 ERA) Game Two - Sanchez (6-2, 2.90 ERA) vs. Kershaw (7-4, 4.06 ERA) Game Three - Eveland (3-0, 0.44 ERA) vs. Bush (6-3, 3.65 ERA)

Major Injury Report Escobar Placed on 60 Day D.L. By: J.D. Weeks June 17th, 2011 -- LOS ANGELES, CA -- It seems as if my previous writing predicted an injury in which nobody wanted to see happen. Today against Los Angeles, Kelvim Escobar suffered a broken leg on a pitch hit back right at his right shin. Kelvim Escobar
Escobar was laying on the ground for at least ten minutes, practically screaming in front of a crowd of 57,312 fans that held their hearts in silence watching their night's rival go down in pain, and suddenly felt remorse for the man. Escobar was helped off by manager Bob Geren and backup catcher Kurt Suzuki. Originally, Escobar thought that the injury wasn't as serious as it was. "As soon as I got hit, I knew from the pain that something was wrong. I didn't know I broke my leg though. I've had tons of injuries in my career, and most of them came from a problem in my mechanics or a problem pitching. Never has something this unlucky happened to me. Especially in a tight race in the middle of the season. This is a worst-case scenario for me, I just want to play baseball." The injury will force Escobar to be off his leg for at least 1-2 months, and another 3-4 weeks for rehabilitation. Basing off previous occurrences of the injury, I'd say Escobar won't be back in full shape until the end of the regular season. This is a huge blow for the A's, who had one of the best months pitching wise as any team in baseball. For now, Bob Geren announced that Antonini would be would become the starter to fill Escobar's spot, which is the number two after Bedard. Antonini is 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA in 28 innings for the season. I really think Antonini is a short-term answer, because he's not a big league starter. He's been terrific as a reliever, but I don't think he'll be able to go out against the best lineups in baseball and be able to shut them down three times a night. Preliminary discussions for a trade have already rumored around and been talked about on different talk shows such as ESPN. Some teams who are already out of the race maybe already willing to perform a trade sending a good starter to the A's. Rich Hill of the Baltimore Orioles
One guy I like is Rich Hill. In the first and last year of his contract, Hill is 7-5 with a 2.99 ERA with the Orioles, one of the worst teams in all of baseball. Hill has been a workhorse all of his career, which could be a huge plus for the Oakland bullpen, who's been anything but consistent so far. Another team the A's could be in contact with is the Blue Jays, who have been a seller for the better part of the last ten years. The Jays feature Ricky Romero, Dustin McGowan, Jesse Litsch, and Shaun Marcum available for trade. One guy who may be out of reach for a team like Oakland is Brandon Webb of the White Sox. Webb, a probable hall of famer, is a pitcher available from a team who sits 15 games back of the race already. However, Webb's three year, fat contract is probably something Oakland doesn't want. Two more guys I could see are Ian Snell and Paul Maholm from the Pirates. Both have ERA's over 4.50, which could be a positive and a negative. The A's could probably get them for less than say a Ricky Romero, but they could also not perform to high levels. The Pirates are a disastrous team, but ERA's speak for themselves. All of this talk is preliminary, and Mike Antonini could even end up being a starter for the A's for years to come. So far it doesn't look like much is open on the trade market, but come time for the trade deadline, the A's will most likely be one of the busiest teams out there.

Major Injury Report Perez Placed on 60 Day D.L. By: J.D. Weeks June 19th, 2011 -- EMERYVILLE, CA -- In a very important series against the Dodgers, the A's lost two significant pitchers to injury. First was Escobar, and now Rafael Perez. While pitching in relief in game three, Perez suffered a torn hamstring. The injury will cause Perez to miss 2-3 months minimum, and he's been placed on the 60 day D.L. with Escobar. Rafael Perez
This injury is more significant in my opinion than the loss of Escobar, because the bullpen has been bad enough as it is. Losing one of your best relievers, the guys who's been nearly perfect lately, is a very tough obstacle to overcome. I don't know if this is something you can cure by just bringing someone else in through trade or free agency, so I think you'll see various minor league pitchers on the club at different points. AAA reliever Tyler Johnson was called up to pitch in the bullpen as a middle reliever. It is still unknown who will be able to fill this void at the set up role. Chris Ray and Mark Lowe are two guys who have the most experience and talent, but both have had struggles in 2011. It looks like Ziegler will fill that role for now, but he's also been shaky. I think you could see either Trevor Cahill, Michael Inoa, Vin Mazzaro, or Henry Rodriguez called up for bullpen work, and a possible short-term conversion to relief work. The A's are pretty desperate right now for relief pitching, and this is what it may come to.
