So, my PS3 turned 1 not long ago..so..i decided to see what 1 year of dust looks like in it, and to give it a clean.

This is a Aus 60gig, always been horizontal.

I have vacuumed the vents every week (give or take), and dust it off with a microfibre cloth daily...Never used compressed air on it.

Its home for starters, 3' from carpet.

*EDIT* added one of inside the BD Drive for the hell of it :smileyhappy: Thats after 1year 6months.

So after that I have to say it wasn't as bad as I thought. But there was a lot of fine dust in it, and only a little bit of a clump under the fan on the cpu/gpu heatsink part, nothing but fine dust on the heatsink fins.

Bottom casing was very dusty (also found little bugs a mosquito..and a hair...yeah i dunno..) top of case was just as bad, under the Blue Ray drive was fairly bad (doesn't look like to much in the pics but I blew it without thinking to take pics)

The fan was covered in thick fine dust

Other things =

screws on the fan were a little loose...i could move it around like 2mm..(its pretty quiet now and doesn't vibe like it used too)..was sorta concerned about that...

Top plate on case (Playstation 3 bit) wasnt tightened enough..screw was pretty loose...

*****************************************
g-unit soldier22's  PS3 = Launch 60gig System.

Once again, doesnt look bad...also a little weird why there are concentrated points of dust on the case under the fan...
 Thanks for the Pics :smileyhappy:
******** Pulled apart again to replace Thermal Paste ******
Yep...so it was pretty crap, some parts of the chips were dry , and there was something on the Cell which was REALLY sticky, you can see it in the pics (black dot) , The thermal paste was sloppy and sticky on the outter edges...Surprized it has never froze due to heat of turned it self off...or worse..
Was also a few clumps of dust around there.
Artic silver 5 was used to replace this.
Its all done and good now, and glad i did it....Its pretty quiet too, but time will tell.
********TIPS ON PULLING APPART*****************

*disclaimer*

This should only be done by people with a bit of know how, with the right tools and a nice area to do it in. If you drop anything thing, break a clip, thread a screw or break a ribbon cable you will kick yourself forever!. and feel like a bit of a tool..

If you think you might forget where screws go , do what i did and take pics if you can..they come in handy if you forget where things go, or which way a ribbon cable went in..that and i guess you could post em here so we can see :smileytongue:...I would like to know what it looks like if compressed air is used as a cleaning method...Or little to no cleaning..

Also laying out screws is a good way to remember where and how they went...not just 1big pile..
And dont be scared of it..man/women put it together, man/women can pull it apart :smileywink:
Also try and ground yourself..even if its by touching the metal on your oven or the microwave.

**

I basicly followed this guide (of a 20,the guys who did the ps3grill...i love that thing...)  http://www.llamma.com/PS3/repair/PS3_disassembly_tutorial.htm
Now, get the warrenty sticker off (i hate that part), then the little foot..
Then there is a little hex screw, i used the right sized flathead screwdriver.
Then the top screws (easy)

To get the case off, there is a little clip on the back right, middle and the middle right, get a small screwdriver to unclip them, ..there are little clips at the front..so take care not to break them.

There is no need to remove the powersupply or card readers etc (for cleaning),
Start undoing screws Dont undo the heatsink ones unless your willing to change the thermal paste (PS would have to be removed for that btw)
The rest is fairly simple, undo the screws , get your grip onit and get it out of the bottom tray, The HDD bay is a good holding area for that.
Clean, undo the fan...look...gasp..its huge IRL..

When your done put it back together i guess..

Now, I had troble with Putting the top case back on, so
Put the front clips in first, then try and push it down..if it does..then your good..if it doesnt then the little button on the card reader is getting wedged..get it to go in and you should be good, just push it down and clip it all in...(that was the most annoying for me as i didnt realise it was that :smileymad: )

**ribbon cabbles**
To undo these, get a small flathead screwdriver, put in between the cable and the clip, the sides or the middle...doesnt really matter, twist and it will unclip.

DO NOT FORGET TO PLUG EVERY THING BACK IN!!..i know dah right...but it happens...i forgot about the hdd...not a good feeling..
If i have missed anything that could be usefull, let me know an ill stick it up there :smileyhappy:

******************
I'm mainly writing this up to show what general use of a ps3 looks like, really there was no need to clean it under these conditions (but it did help) , but for people who let them get very dusty think what yours would look like...Wouldnt want to see that dusty playstation kids one....or other ps3's sony get sent back :S

But as always, YMMV and you could treat yours like crap and then someone who babies it will die..I just wanted mine to shut the f**k up...and it did :smileyhappy:

No PS3's were harmed in this process :smileytongue:

Nice to know you care about it that much. Looks nice. And put a 56k warning in the title.

Nice to know that is after 1 year without cleaning it in depth. I cant believe people used compressed air :smileysurprised: on their machine almost monthly.
