Either that or someone would have taken them to court by now don't you think?

Don't get me wrong, I honestly feel bad for those that have had problems, but calling Sony a bunch of crooks is not very constructive.

Hey Optimus,

You are looking at this from the wrong point of view.  Sure, if there were a massive problem then Sony would be forced to recall or extend warranties.

You and a lot of others are not considering the flip side.  I hear a lot of people saying "sorry your PS3 broke but the failure rate is well within industry standards".

Lets say that's true.  Lets even say that the failure rate is so low that only 10 guys named Bob have ever had their PS3s die.

Do the 10 Bobs deserve to loose their money?  Lets say its only 5 guys named Bob or only one.  Should we all just turn away and say "sorry Bob, guess you've got back luck"?

Or should Sony decide to back up their product and protect EVERY consumer who paid their hard-earned cash over to them.

Now, sniff, imagine that you are Bob...

By the way, that ebay seller (just one seller) that I keep mentioning has sold 48 new PS3 blu-ray lasers since Friday (its now Tuesday).  No problems at all.  Lets all just keep our heads in the sand and hope that our PS3s keep working.

PS. Your the only one whose called Sony crooks.  My message is that they are a business and if we are not careful as consumers that business will give minimum satisfaction for maximum revenue.

The fact is that out of ever 3 million consoles sold - only around 12,000 or something like that get the YLOD.

I believe there really is only a .5% Failure rate that Sony actually admitted to, and I guess 12,000 is a whole lot but not enough. The acceptable rate of failure before they legally have to do anything is 10%.

But thats 12,000x300 (Just because of the price drop I'll say 300) = $3,600000 of peoples money wasted just to spend even more. I hope I'm not part of that .5%.

Well unless it died of bordom I really can't think of anything I could have done to kill it. It gets used twice a week at most because of classes, and training I have.

That is very interesting, I hear that a lot.  Maybe not using it enough can be a problem?

Maybe the people who use their PS3's more then 4-6 hrs a day last longer?   As it doesnt allow as much dust to settle?

A rolling stone will gather no moss (myth busters may dis-agree).

Or if you turn it on, play for 5 minutes then shut it off all the time,

maybe it isnt enough time for the entire MB to heat up to the same temperature causing hot/cold spots,

which could cause physical movement by expansion and contraction at different rates at specific portions of the MB.  This would cause cracking and damage.

These are all just therories of course, but many people who got YLOD say they use their PS3's very seldomly.

I'm on my third, its my fault all the way, or at least they were causes I could have avoided.

Kudos!

Finally someone on this site who knows something about economics! Whether its 10 percent or its .5 percent, its still leaving customers unsatisfied. To be a successful business, you need to have/keep a good reputation. The path that Sony is taking, Im going to say they will be around[or have the same owner(s)] for maybe another 12-15 years at the most. All they are thinking about is money and when consumers find out what Sony is really about (mostly just money), their business will slowly die. There are countless businesses that this has happened to because all that mattered to them was one thing, money.

You can all flame me, but im only being logical and most likely telling the truth!

If there was a true defect with the PS3? I know it could be devastating for their sales if a high failure rate was released, but if so would they stand by their customers and repair our systems?

It's hard not to notice all the YLOD posts showing up all over the net, from Amazon to best buy to countless broken systems on ebay, and craigs list.

Even best buys private auction site (returned, unsold and refurbished merchandise) has more PS3's than any other system.

My dorm hasn't been immune to this. Of the five guys with PS3's on my floor, three of or systems have died, one with a drive failure and the other two, including mine had the hardware failure.

I really hate thinking the PS3 has some reliability issues, but anymore I have to believe what I'm seeing all around me.

ive had 3 ps3s . started with a 40 gig. upgraded to a 80 gig and now a 120 gig . all were bought brand new and never had a problem with any of them. if you were in one area that had 10000 white cars you might start to think everyone in the world is driving a white car huh ? just cause its saturated doenst mean its faulty. the ps3 has the 2nd lowest failure rate of all the systems. we all no which one is dead last . and they had so many problems that they had to extend the warranty to cover there crapy hardware. its new tech so it isnt going to be perfect. treat your system with care. i read all these post from people with ylod, " i went to go to gamestop to pick up a new game , and i left my ps3 on cause id only be gone for a little while "........no wonder it overheated to the point that the soldner liquified/cracked .... just a example but i have seen this on this fourm.... those same people are the ones who prolly fall asleep with there systems on smoke in there houses ect.

My 80GB was bought in Dec. 2007. It died two weeks ago and won't read any discs. I am a very light user of PS3, only average couple hours a week. And I took good care of it and it's got great ventilation too. Firmware or not, one thing can be sure is they have faulty parts in the system that cause the system to not loading discs or YLOD. Sure, all systems break down, however I would expect something like PS3 with Sony's reputation will last at least 3 years before it died. I am more upset about their outrageous repair cost that is more than half of the price of a new system. Another way to force us to buy their new system, maybe? After we already spent a big chunk of money on their system.

Of course SONY will never admit they have faulty parts, why would they? Business is just business. Money is the only concern for every business.

Kudos!

I've never had a disc read error on any of my PS3's beginning March 2007.  I have had the random freeze though.

Now I'm getting poling and last night even small red dots in the shape of squares even on the xmb.  Only on items I'm not highlighting.

So all PS3's have a fault which causes disc read errors?  Even though I've never experienced it?

People get disc read errorsfrom putting dirty discs in the PS3, I never have so no disc read errors.

Most disc read errors are solved by wiping the lens with alcohol.  Thats a huge design flaw???

Kudos!
