I put my PS3 on some blocks, and it's a bit cooler than it was before. Yes, the PS3 slim getting hot in the back (especially the HDMI cord right at the HDMI port IS NORMAL, for the slim anyway. Oh and, do folding at home, and take out the HDMI cable for a few hours. You'll be surprised at how cool the system becomes in comparison to when you have the HDMI cord plugged in. They're wooden blocks at the sides, under the PS3 for elevation. They're about an inch in width, and about half an inch high and about 4-5 inches long (or more).
