Well I know this might not be too long a read for most of you, but I
just posted it on the gamespot forums, and from the feedback I've seen
it seems too many people suffer from a short attention span . Hope you guys don't suffer from it too.
:
It all makes sense now. Ken Kutaragi is a genius, and Sony will lead
the gaming industry for a third consecutive generation. How, you ask?
The answer: Sony's Blue-ray format. Blasphamy you might say, but its
true. I'll Explain:
First
the facts. We all know that the PS3 will be the most expensive console
next generation, there is no denying that. How much it will cost, we
don't know. Speculation has the price tag ranging from $400 to a
whopping $1000. It sounds crazy, but considering the technology Sony's
putting into this thing, it could most likely be true. The RSX GPU
supplyed by Nnvida is expected to mirror the performance of their new
7800 graphics card, which currently costs $500. The new Blu-ray format
to be used in the PS3 currently costs $3,000 for stand alone models in
Japan. Add the router hub functionality and 2x HDMI Analog Support, the
console's features look like overkill. But this is all justified for
the sole purpose that it supports Blu-ray technology.
But didn't
you just say Blu-ray disc drives cost $3,000 just for the stand alone
model? Wouldn't that drive up the price of the console? And isn't this
a big risk for Sony to be investing into new technology? These things
are all true, but there is much more to this then you think.
The
Blu-ray format was created in mind for High Definition TV. A
single-layer Blu-Ray disc at 25 GB can hold over 2 hours of HD video
and audio, while a dual-layer 50 GB disc can hold twice as much. The
larger disc capacity can also store up to 13 hours of standard
definition video and audio. But as many of you know, there is a format
war between HD DVD and Blu-ray. Although Blu-ray has a larger disc
capacity then HD DVD (15 GB on a single-layer disc), HD DVD benefits
from lower manufacturing costs for their disc drives and recordable
media. With Blu-ray being an all new format, its going to cost
considerably more.
So then how do the companies backing Blu-ray overcome this and what does it have to do with the PS3?
The
answer is simple, and makes Ken Kutaragi look like a genius. By
choosing to use the Blu-ray for the PS3, Kutaragi and Sony are
promoting a new format disc drive to the masses. With an already strong
fan base thanks to the PS2 leading the gaming industry for the second
straight generation, Sony is taking a gamble by using the Blu-ray
format for the PS3 and pricing it under at least $1000. And this is
pure GENIUS. Why? To the gamer a new console costing between $400 to
$1000 is way too much. But to the Consumer, a gaming console that is
around that price range that can play HD video and audio is a steal.
Brain cramp? It's simple:
You
know that currently a Blu-Ray disc drive costs $3,000. Many of you also
know that HD broadcasting will become the new standard in 2007. With
the price for HD TVs lowering yearly and becoming more affordable, it
only makes sense that you want to get the best bang for your buck. It
is almost 100% certain that Sony will begin to develop Blu-ray DVDs for
the PS3, and considering how much a Blu-ray disc drive costs today, it
would be considered a steal. Who wouldn't want a Blu-ray disc drive
that can play HD quality video and audio for the fraction of the price?
. With people buying the PS3 for the HD DVD quality, it will most
certainly drive down the price for Blue-ray disc drives and the cost of
the PS3 console. So with that it becomes a win-win situation for
everbody. HD TV owners get to have HD Quality DVDs for the fraction of
the price, gamers benefit from a lower costing console, Blu-ray
supports successfully establish their new format, and Sony once again
leads the gaming industry.
As amazing as it sounds, Ken
Kutaragi and Sony have done this before, promoting CD-Rom for the
original Playstation and DVD for the Playstation 2. So its no wonder
why they have lead the gaming industry for the past two generations: by
investing into new technology that will benefit both consumers and
gamers.

What's different about Blu Ray vs. the past DVD and CD formats is that those were universally developed and accepted standards. This time there are 2 standards being presented and the last time this happened (VHS vs. Betamax) Sony lost. This time around also is that Sony has some real heavy competitors (mainly MS) to go against. MS and Nintendo are no Sega, they both have mass amounts of resources to spend on R&D and can put on the pressure in terms of price.
What is see is not really genius but comfort in having a big lead in ignoring the rest of the market. Sony really should be more responsive to consumers instead of saying things like "it's going to be expensive." They need to do what they can to lower the price. I mean if Sony leverages the PS3 to push its Blu Ray technology, MS can easily leverage the next and future Windows OS to leverage HD-DVD by not supporting BDR.

I find it hard to believe that Kutaragi is a genius with the way he acts.
