First off, let me say how happy I am to finally have purchased a Playstation 3. But unfortunately It's not going so well yet.
I first purchased a system 2 days ago and noticed that there was a high pitched whine coming from the system. It wasn't from any cable as sound was definitely coming from the hardware its self.
Thinking it was just a defective unit, I returned it and got another one. Once that one was all setup, the exact same thing happened, so yesterday I returned that system to get a third unit thinking maybe the other two were part of a bad batch. Unfortunately for me, the third one is making the exact same noise.
Here's the odd part though. When the system is turned on from being off for a period of time, it does not make a noise at all. It is a very silent machine, other than when the fan kicks in a little more, but nothing I wouldn't expect. After say 3 to 5 minutes or so of running, the high pitched whine will start. This is almost an unbearable noise, so it's not something I'm willing to let go. Luckily the noise gets drowned out though when I play a game.
Here's what I've tried to solve my problem.
I switched from HDMI to composite to see if it was the cable, I tried different power outlets in the same room, and in other rooms. The noise is coming from the hardware, but I just don't know why.
I've called Sony and the guy said he hasn't heard of the problem before and even went into a story about his uncle and sound problems or something. Good tech support though. He said a higher up technical support will contact me within 1 or 2 days.
Is it possible that I got three bad systems? Does anyone have any ideas at all? I'm open to trying almost anything to rid myself of this horrible noise.
Any help from anyone on this board would be greatly appreciated. I've heard things of noise, but no whine.

Welcome to the forums. I would take it back to the store since you just got it. Should be able to exchange it no problem.
Ps3 2 years of bad press and STILL going strong. Bring it!
Everyone says Ps3 has no games yet they want all of them on their console!?!

well, i dont know how loud the noise is for him, but the hdd in the ps3 makes a really really high pitched noise, if you listen hard enough |

I had a feeling that someone would think I was trolling, that's fine. No, I am not, but actually wish I was then I wouldn't have this problem.
As for the hard drive spinning, unfortunately that's not the case either. I've heard many hard drives in my day, and if hard drives made this noise, no one would use them. Besides, the sound isn't coming from the left side of it, where the hard drive is located, it appears to be louder on the right side and back of the unit.
I really don't want to return this system, as it is the third one I am on. I thought maybe there would be something other than a manufacturing defect. For me to go through three systems and have this happen is just not normal. Maybe theres an explanation for it.
If I can't get things solved by Sony within this week, as I still have the 7 days to return it, I'm just going to return the system and wait for them to get a new batch in. Who knows.

You have to put your ear to the unit? There aren't any sounds that would make you think the system has a problem,normally. The fans will kick into high from time to time depending upon what kind of processing they're doing, but other than that the system is generally pretty quiet.

that high pitched sound is comming from the fan dude, you have 3 choices, get a new fan installed, get a cooler for the fan to help lower the pitch or the easiest and most satisfying one... trade in your ps3 for a new one.
