I got my PS3 on launch day and mine makes no noice unless the fan starts going for like 2 seconds.

We have passed the point where we are saying it is just me, we're now at the point where we see it is happening to other people, and that it is not an isolated situation.
I do own an Xbox 360, and I do notice it's loud, but mostly just fan noise, which I can live with. This is not a normal noise. _________________________________________________________________

The sound is disturbingly high pitched, I am not surprised it doesnt translate to a recording at all. I build my own PC's so I am intimately familiar with the sound that high powered processors, and power supply's will make and I actually like the sounds of fans as I know they often produce white noise - I sleep with an air purifier near my bed mainly for white noise and I use a fan at work to generate white noise around my cubicle so I dont hear nearby co-workers farting etc. LETS BE CLEAR HERE FOR ALL THOSE NEW TO THIS THREAD - ITS NO SPECIFIC GAME, ITS NO SPECIFIC HEARING RANGE ISSUE, SONY HAS SOME BAD PS3 BATCHES OUT THERE AND OPTIMUS RHYME, MYSELF AND A FEW OTHERS IN THIS THREAD HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY THIS VERY AUDIBLE, VERY HIGH PITCHED NOISE COMING FROM THEIR PS3'S. THIS IS NOT NORMAL SO STOP TRYING TO JUSTIFY IT  PROOF POSITIVE: I forgot to mention earlier that when I checked my serial numbers on my PS3 guess what > CE133212XX3. This has to be like the 8th or 9th PS3 with this specific serial range that I've seen in this thread. Either a shipment was dropped, or mismanufactured and we ALL need to move forward with this in mind. Exchange your PS3 and get one outside the above mentioned serial range or get a replacement unit directly from SONY like I'm doing. And I'm mad for you too Optimus Rhyme - you should have your silent PS3 by now. I still have 2-3 days to wait for shipping info from SONY and then 2-3 days mailing there and then 7-10 business days to get my new silent PS3 to me. J-MON

I don't know about everyone else but I had my PS3 since day one and I havent had not one problem with my hardware. No noises, no movies pausing on me. I don't know what some of yous people do next to you system, but you need to stop because your messing it up, and i dont know why beacuse I smoke while I play and it's been 6 months I had the system for and nothin. All I can say is "Take Care Of You Stuff" because $600 don't come around all the time.

Thanks J-MON, although I still feel we will have others giving tips that we have gone over, it's just bound to happen.
Oddly enough, when I tried to record the audio originally with a microphone that I purchased a few years ago, I couldn't hear the sound at all. I then tried the small microphone on the top of my Macbook. Yeah, this tiny little pinhole dot could pick up audio better than this microphone I had purchased. Needless to say, I wont be using that microphone anymore.
Now some good news. My PS3 is waiting for me at the Post Office, I will be picking it up within an hour or so.
Good luck waiting J-MON. I can understand your frustrations in waiting to get a working one, but just keep thinking that one day you, and I for that matter, will have fully working Playstation 3's.

Sorry, but you obviously haven't read this thread. These systems make a high pitched whine as soon as they are out of the box. It's nothing tha the user is doing. Don't blame people for things that you think they did unless you are sure of it.
I myself take great care of all my systems, and always do. As I'm sure most people who can actually afford to spend as much as these systems cost generally will take care of their systems.

Sorry for the late post. My PS3 says January 2007. Also, the first two defective units were adquired at EBGames. I think the CE133XXXXXX batch has major problems. Some people may not notice the sound, but I did. It think at the end of the day, we are paying lots of money for a piece of hardware that should at least not bother you at all. Hope that helps!
