PS3 Hard Disk Is Corrupt And Will Be Restored

My Ps3 just recently starting giving me this message... after looking into other people's posts, it seems like the only 2 possible fixes for this issue is to:

a ) Call Sony and have them send me a coffin, and then a new one a few days later.

b ) Buy a laptop HDD and install it myself. (I heard these are relatively cheap, and easy to replace.)

Before I do any of these I wanted to get some suggestions from you guys if possible... I really don't feel like doing either, but I'm leaning towards sending it out to Sony...

I bought my PS3 about 2 weeks ago...

Anyways any tips or suggestions from you guys would be great.

Less than 30 days, take it back to where you bought it and have them give you a brand new one!

I got a suggestion read the manual and quit turning it off from the back.

Option #3.
Remove the drive, place it in a computer and format it.  Return the drive to the PS3 and see if it will take.

Hey, I had the same thing happen. The first two times it happened, the restore worked, and I was able to continue using the system. A few weeks later, I received the error, and the restore wouldn't take, it would just reset and come back to the same error.
 
I fixed it with the following steps.
 
1. Took out the PS3 HDD (clicked open the cover, unscrewed the blue screw, slid drive towards the front)
2. Opened up my WD External USB drive case (runs on a 2.5" HDD)
3. Plugged the PS3 HDD into the USB case, and plugged it into my PC.
4. Ran the diskmgmt.msc from the Windows RUN in the START Menu
5. Once the drive came up, I had to right-click on it and initialize it, this gave it a drive letter.
6. Then I downloaded this little app : (http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/download/fat32format.zip).
7. Extracted it, and ran the following command in a DOS prompt: fat32 format e:      ***obviously replacing the e: with the drive letter you saw in the disk management window.
8. Plugged the HDD back into the Ps3, and it formatted it to it's filesystem, and all was well.
 
 
Honestly it was pretty simple, the hardest part was crackinig open my external USB drive, as I didn't want to ruin it's shiny case http://www.wdc.com/global/products/imageviewer.asp?model=wdfPassp

This post is a little old, but it took me a while to find the right steps, so I figured I'd post in here to help out the next who runs into this.

Gonna have to do that soon, myself, but to increase the HDD space.

Now WHY would you feel the need to say something like that? Do you feel that the consumer that pays $500, or $600 on my case shouldn't complain, even if there is a problem? I HAVE to turn my console off from the back when it locks up or my bluetooth freezes me out, which is more often than I care to talk about. Have just a little compassion for some of us experiencing tech issues.

I've had freeze-ups before, but have never turned it off from the back. I've always been able to keep my finger on the front power button for 5 seconds or so to get it to turn off.

At any rate, turning it off from the back may corrupt a file, but shouldn't corrupt the whole disk.

do you know if i'll be able to salvage any of the files on the hard disk if I follow your suggestions ? I've misplaced my reciept, paid cash, sony won't exchange I'll have to pay 150 for out of warranty exchange then only have 90 days warranty with that...have had it since end of Aug. and have "precious" photos on there... not too worried about game data...i can play again...but the pics... i'm so sad... just recovered from the blue screen death of my pc and just had to replace network adapters, but my files were okay... i hope i can have the same outcome with the p3... can you give me some hope? lol
