anything to do with an firmware/os upgrade 1. never be the first 2. wait till net traffic is down, so you wont get corrupted files 3. backup before you update 4. Read with a grain of salt anyone with problems on these boards, saying they have issues with just a few posts and recently joined....believe those who have been here awhile and are reputable

I downloaded it this morning 1230am mt and didnt use it. this morning, i was planning to play mgs4 and i put in the disk. the system takes the disk in and everything BUT my tv shows no signal/black screen. i checked my remote and found it isnt syncing. i tried another remote and again it wasnt syncing. the front on/off swtich doesnt respond but the eject does. i did what many people here did and while it was 'frozen' with the black screen: i just switched the power switch on the back and waited about 30s. i rebooted it and then it loaded fine. remote synced. i wasnt sure what the heck was going on (i did all this before reading this forum, so im still new here) so i turned the system off from the front button just for trying and it shutown like normal. then i turned it on with the remote and it seems to be working now. im so scared of this crap. my 360 got the rrod. my wii displays graphic glitches and stuff (tho nintendo claims its 'normal). i thought the ps3 was the most reliable?!?! i think ill leave it on the folding at home thingy for a while (saves my ps3 while helping the world, i guess). so anyone who said ppl are ripping the ps3 for bricking...its true (though i wouldnt call it bricking). dont be in denial. if it was 1 or 2 ppl making a big deal out of many, then its believable. but we have over 20+ pages. i experienced it myself so it is probably true. question: what does sony do to 'fix' it? do we redownload the new firmware and it overwrites it after? like i said, this is the first problem ive had with my ps3. i have the 40gb one i got in april.
I tested it during gameplay XMB work's. and the new chat function I don't have 100 friend's

I FIXED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this Fix can be done with any GB ps3 so dont worry, Sooo...... I have two Ps3's in my house a 60gb and my roommates 80gb now i kno not everyone can do this but:.......here is a simple effective fix - remove the hard drive from your ps3
- take your other ps3 and remove its hard drive
- insert your hard drive into your "other" PS3
- it will ask you to reformat hit "yes"
- when it is finished reinsert put your other Ps3's hard drive back in
- put your hard drive back into your ps3
- it should turn back on correctly & ask you to reformat your Hard drive and "WaLah!" your back in acton
keep in mind you Can redownload your Purchases from the PS3 store free under (view downloads) your pics and vids will be gone unless saved somehwere else your Online STATS for your games are on the netowrk and unaffected by this problem Your Game saves will be gone unless they are saved somewhere else besides your hard drive The Benefit: you saved $150 bux instead of sending this to sony for that price or you saved 30 bux from not buying a SAT32 cable, or if your not PC Savvy
For the computer savvy out there who don't own another PS3, you can also put your hard drive into your PC and format it that way. Basically you right click "My Computer" Click on "Manage" then select Disk Management under the Storage area. From there a wizard will pop up and walk you through the steps for your "uninitialized drive" which -should- be your PS3 hard drive. WARNING: ONLY DO THIS IN THE COMPUTER IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
I just want to expand on this. If you don't want to lose your saved games and other data, I would suggest the following: - Turn off your brick completely via the switch in the back.
- Remove the HDD from your brick.
- Get another (good) HDD and connect that internally to your soon-to-be non-brick.
- Restart the PS3.
- If it needs formatted, the PS3 will prompt you to do so.
- Connect your original HDD via USB using an adapter cable or an external HDD enclosure.
- *Try* to copy all the data from the orignial HDD to the new one.
- Restart the PS3 and verify that it works and all your original data is now working on the new HDD.
Notice, I said *try* in step 5. Obviously, your PC cannot read from the PS3 HDD because it doesn't understand the proprietary file format, but the PS3 will understand it. If there is any salvagable data on it, you should be able to connect it externally since it won't try to boot from that HDD, but from the new one. Message Edited by CrayzeeCarl on 07-02-2008 10:00 AM
Has anyone tried this? I am > 90% sure this will solve your problems without erasing all your data. As EVILEMPIRE said, you're probably gonna want to buy a bigger hard drive anyway.
