If there was a true defect with the PS3? I know it could be devastating for their sales if a high failure rate was released, but if so would they stand by their customers and repair our systems? It's hard not to notice all the YLOD posts showing up all over the net, from Amazon to best buy to countless broken systems on ebay, and craigs list. Even best buys private auction site (returned, unsold and refurbished merchandise) has more PS3's than any other system. My dorm hasn't been immune to this. Of the five guys with PS3's on my floor, three of or systems have died, one with a drive failure and the other two, including mine had the hardware failure. I really hate thinking the PS3 has some reliability issues, but anymore I have to believe what I'm seeing all around me.

Are you asking the hypothetical question about whether the executives at Sony would engage in a conspiracy? Why would you think that they would? Sure, some people have had issues with their PS3s, but it's obviously a very small fraction of PS3 owners. Think about how many threads you see and compare it to the number of PS3s sold... And I hope you realize that looking at the statistics for your dorm is not a good way to extrapolate to the entire country/planet. (If both your parent got cancer, would you instantly assume that everyone over 40 has cancer? )

Your telling me I'm speculating when your obviously doing the same thing. How can you even say it's an "obvious" small fraction of PS3 owners? How do you know? How many owners actually post when they have a problem? How many systems are repaired third party? How many systems are returned to the store? Besides I never once stated there is a high failure rate. But I do tend to believe what I see over what some trust in...

You're right---I have no numbers to back up my statement---however, I certainly believe that someone with a problem is more likely to post than someone who doesn't have an issue... There's nothing wrong with "believing what you see". The problem is when you try to extrapolate from a small sample size.

Hi Breakstation, In answer to your question: no, of course not. Sony is still riding on the goodwill of its brand name. They hope people like me never think that something might be wrong before buying their system. I said before that I do wish a consumer watchdog would track items like you have. Since my PS3 blu-ray drive broke down I've been looking at ebay sales for blu-ray lasers and drives and have found that there is a lot of activity there. AmnesiaInnocent would like you to consider that PS3s only break down in very rare cases. He critiques your poor statistical conclusion by replacing it with another poor statistical method of his own. The other side of that coin that he is not considering of course is that if breakdowns are so very rare, why won't Sony simply extend their warranty or offer at least a 2 or 3 year warranty. They could - if they truly believed that these were "isolated cases" as their blog states. If they are so isolated, why not back up their product? For me, that cements the conclusion that something is wrong and they are waiting for the storm to blow over, while still riding on the goodwill of the Sony brand name. Sooner or later though...either consumers will wise up or Sony will try to become the reputable company that it once was. Message Edited by Lock842 on 11-02-2009 07:41 AM
