Hi Breakstation, In answer to your question: no, of course not. Sony is still riding on the goodwill of its brand name. They hope people like me never think that something might be wrong before buying their system. I said before that I do wish a consumer watchdog would track items like you have. Since my PS3 blu-ray drive broke down I've been looking at ebay sales for blu-ray lasers and drives and have found that there is a lot of activity there. AmnesiaInnocent would like you to consider that PS3s only break down in very rare cases. He critiques your poor statistical conclusion by replacing it with another poor statistical method of his own. The other side of that coin that he is not considering of course is that if breakdowns are so very rare, why won't Sony simply extend their warranty or offer at least a 2 or 3 year warranty. They could - if they truly believed that these were "isolated cases" as their blog states. If they are so isolated, why not back up their product? For me, that cements the conclusion that something is wrong and they are waiting for the storm to blow over, while still riding on the goodwill of the Sony brand name. Sooner or later though...either consumers will wise up or Sony will try to become the reputable company that it once was. Message Edited by Lock842 on 11-02-2009 07:41 AM
Yeah, they are just a deceitful company, they made thier product fail just to make people pay more. lolwut? I'd love to know where you and your ilk get the data for coming to the conclusion that there is a significant failure rate.

Ahhh...no. You could have done a regular system backup...
Backup utility only preserves some game data, and no personal data like music, movies, or pictures. I used to think the backup utility would protect my data, then try to restore on a new PS3 and epic failure. Only will restore properly to the system it was made from. This means........ Backup Utility=Useless.

I that case, isn't it up to us the consumer, to stand up for what we paid for? To demand our product be fixed? Even if the failure numbers fall under industry standards, the drive failure and heat sink problems are well documented and very common among PS3 owners with problems. I can't think of any other issues PS3's have, know that I think of it?

The backup utility is far from useless. Even when restoring to another PS3, it does preserve some game data (as you mentioned). Some is better than none.

You're right---I have no numbers to back up my statement---however, I certainly believe that someone with a problem is more likely to post than someone who doesn't have an issue... There's nothing wrong with "believing what you see". The problem is when you try to extrapolate from a small sample size.
Ok how about 2.5 million PS3's? That a big enough sample? SCEUK has run searches of its customer complaints/warranty database to identify the number of reports made to it regarding instances of system shutdown or failure in circumstances where the front panel yellow indicator is illuminated," added Maguire. "The results show that of all PS3s sold in the UK to date, fewer than one half of one per cent of units have been reported as failing in circumstances where the yellow indicator is illuminated." Source: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/sony-tackles-bbc-over-ps3-f ailure-report Thats for YLOD, which even then doesnt mean anything specific for sure. So you cant say that the PS3 has "x" flaw can you now. If it did it would be the same failure every time. I hear Blu-ray drive, I hear HDD failure, I hear Black screens, overheating, neglect, abuse, etc. So which one is the fundamental flaw the PS3 has? Maybe all of them? Then that would mean every single PS3 would be dead now, they arent. I say its new tech and with that comes risks, and risks are something the consumer will weigh on their own and determine wether or not they choose to protect said investment. I bought my PS3 for $700 back in early 2007, I got a 3yr warrenty for $129CND. Guess what? I am getting issues with my GPU showing artifacts so I'm sending it to Sony for a in-warrenty repair. I thought it was smart because the previous current gen system was an absolute disaster with well over 35% failling straight out of the box. Then 95% of launch models dying within the first year. It only had a 3 month warrenty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok so I bought a PS3 with card readers, I had a camera that uses SD cards. They get full so I would dump the pics on the PS3 and wipe the card. I had a baby girl in June of 2007, my first child. I took lots of pictures, like a madman, she was just so cute. I got disc stuck in my PS3, tried everything and ended up killing my PS3 in the process. "Good thing I backed it up I thought". Took my PS3 for repairs, then Futureshop lost it! So I bought a new 60GB PS3(open box) and took her home. Tried to restore the backup file to this new PS3 and it says "this backup was made from a different PS3 system a full restore is not possible." Now this backup file was 18GB, guess what restored????? 2 screen shots from Linger in Shadows and a small amount of worthless game save data. Not one single song or priceless picture of my Daughter would restore. To me game data is just a excuse/reason not to play your games. I like the games I have and really like restarting them if they are good. If the game is so bad you dont want to replay it, then you shouldnt own it. So if anyone knows how to restore pics from a backup file onto a different PS3 let me know. Ihave tried a 60GB, a 80GB(new one), a 120GB PS3 slim, and 160GB Drakes bundle all with identical results. I still have the 18GB backup file, and the original 60GB HDD, if you know something I dont please help me. Till then, yeah the backup utility is useless....
