Is yours having GPU issues too? Or power supply issue? Maybe dirty Blu-ray lens? Overheating HDD maybe? Did you drop it? I should point out this PS3 was made in 2006, and is only recently showing issues for me. Hey these things arent perfect, but they do the job. They break sure, but you knew that could happen and thats why you all bought extended warrenties..... Right? Again I point the previous console having a coplete disaster upon launch and even still to this day. Then I heard how revolutionary the Cell was and completely experimental, I wanted in, but I didnt want to be left out in the cold in any circumstance. Think about this, Sony gives you a 1 yr warrenty, you thought that was enough, so that means you only wanted to ensure you would be gaming for 1 yr. Would you ever admit that?

Maybe for you, but the PS3's I have seen die all had either a bad BD drive or a heatsink issue. You should read through all the customer reviews on Amazon, and best buy. Even the new slim is having a lot of problems right out of the box. I would of been very happy with a one year warranty if I was getting a quality product, that lived up to the Sony name.

I bought a slim then took it right back, its too loud after a short period of time. The disc drive is loud, clunky, and seems to scratch my discs(maybe i'm paranoid). It gets hot after only an hour or so, so I went and got a 160GB, still not nearly as good as my old 60GB. It really is the Cadillac of PS3's. I used to think the 60's were kinda loud, now I see they are the quietest untill they get old. I wish these things would last as long as last gen stuff like the Wii and PS2, but they run hot and heat and electronics dont play nice. But hey games like KZ2, Demon's Souls, Drakes 2, etc are top notch and "only on Playstaion". Like i said, protect your investments, dont trust anyone.

YLOD is caused from the heat sinks, these 2 square shaped things right by them have lost the pasting on them (solder or something its called) and thats what makes it YLOD. bad bd disc drive can be fixed by yourself if you have the knowlege. and to sum it all up, ps3 only gets broken in any way whatsoever if u mistreat it. u should treat it like a high end pc that costs hundreds - thousands to build, you wouldnt do anything to ruin that right? especially if ur ps3 has 4 usb ports and card readers etc.

Hi Breakstation, In answer to your question: no, of course not. Sony is still riding on the goodwill of its brand name. They hope people like me never think that something might be wrong before buying their system. I said before that I do wish a consumer watchdog would track items like you have. Since my PS3 blu-ray drive broke down I've been looking at ebay sales for blu-ray lasers and drives and have found that there is a lot of activity there. AmnesiaInnocent would like you to consider that PS3s only break down in very rare cases. He critiques your poor statistical conclusion by replacing it with another poor statistical method of his own. The other side of that coin that he is not considering of course is that if breakdowns are so very rare, why won't Sony simply extend their warranty or offer at least a 2 or 3 year warranty. They could - if they truly believed that these were "isolated cases" as their blog states. If they are so isolated, why not back up their product? For me, that cements the conclusion that something is wrong and they are waiting for the storm to blow over, while still riding on the goodwill of the Sony brand name. Sooner or later though...either consumers will wise up or Sony will try to become the reputable company that it once was. Message Edited by Lock842 on 11-02-2009 07:41 AM
Unfortunatly I think it's going to have to be the consumer who forces Sony to do anything. Problem is so many seem to be blind to the possibility that the PS3 could very well have a manufacturing defect. Looking through forums of other systems I don't see much of a difference between the number of posts regarding failures, not including the white one though.

It is no where near as bad as the RRoD so I think the biggest problem is that people are comparing the two so much. Sony can't say they have a RRoD equivalent or it would really hurt them. I see that this is a problem but it is not the RRoD for PS3. You guys really have to stop spewing that BS around. That is a big reason why SONY will not admit it ...and yes I think you need to mistreat your PS3 to have this problem. Just shows the PS3 is not as tough as people think. I seriously think any one who does not give their system enough ventilation or sets on the floor should not own one. This system does need to blow a lot of heat. Sorry Accuracy158 but this is just naive. I never mistreated mine and it has plenty of ventilation and it suddenly died. We watched a movie the night before but the next day no disk would read. No abuse. The number of complaints is far too much for this simply to be abuse. Be happy you have a working unit. Before you post that again just think what your reaction would be if you put in your game and nothing happens and then someone says you must have abused it. My name is Lock and you now know someone whose PS3 died without abuse and with only light use over its 18 month life.
