...and yes I think you need to mistreat your PS3 to have this problem. Just shows the PS3 is not as tough as people think. I seriously think any one who does not give their system enough ventilation or sets on the floor should not own one.  This system does need to blow a lot of heat.

Sorry Accuracy158 but this is just naive.  I never mistreated mine and it has plenty of ventilation and it suddenly died.  We watched a movie the night before but the next day no disk would read.  No abuse.  The number of complaints is far too much for this simply to be abuse.

Be happy you have a working unit.  Before you post that again just think what your reaction would be if you put in your game and nothing happens and then someone says you must have abused it.  My name is Lock and you now know someone whose PS3 died without abuse and with only light use over its 18 month life.

Your not the only one who took care of their system only to have it still fail. My first PS3 died only three weeks after I bought it. It wasn't even dusty yet

Well obviously you'll see more people here complaining about there PS3 failing because where would you go if your PS3 failed here, most PS3 owners probably dont even use the forum unless they had a problem. So really it looks like there is more failures than there really is.

Has it been classified a Defect? I think Sony is making the point that people are incorrectly powering down the PS3, which is why they took the power button off the back of the ps3 slim.

I really don't undersatnd how powering down the PS3 from the back switch could be harmful? I always use to power off my PS2 from the back, every time and it still works to this day.

PlayStation may have its problems but it's still the best, the competition also has very many problems and the other competitor basically has none but come on, they took no risks, it's not even HD and basically only on par with PS2.

It has a HDD, unlike the PS2. PS3s are more computer-like, unlike the PS2... Get the point?

I can't explain it myself, but a lot of electronic manufacturers started taking the power switches off in favor of Stand-by. Plus in the PS3 Instructions it states rather clearly to use the stand-by unless you don't plan on using PS3 for an extended time, Like weeks. I'll just say I have a Used PS3 60 GB and I haven't had ANY of the problems people post in these threads because I never hit that switch on back unless my PS3 Totally freezes.

Stand by is defiantly a good thing, which is why almost all high end electronic have it now. Personally I never shut my PS3 off from the back, it was always on stand by, but it still failed.
