Has it been classified a Defect? I think Sony is making the point that people are incorrectly powering down the PS3, which is why they took the power button off the back of the ps3 slim.
I really don't undersatnd how powering down the PS3 from the back switch could be harmful? I always use to power off my PS2 from the back, every time and it still works to this day.
I can't explain it myself, but a lot of electronic manufacturers started taking the power switches off in favor of Stand-by. Plus in the PS3 Instructions it states rather clearly to use the stand-by unless you don't plan on using PS3 for an extended time, Like weeks. I'll just say I have a Used PS3 60 GB and I haven't had ANY of the problems people post in these threads because I never hit that switch on back unless my PS3 Totally freezes.
Even if it totally freezes, you can hold the standby button on the front down and it will eventually shut down. It'll flash and beep a few times, but shut down.

Sony will never admit nothing, I have a failure rate of 100%-3for3. Sent 2 in for YLOD and one in for not reading disc. So whether it be 2% 0r 99.9%, there is still a problem with mostly 60GB ps3's. If they are so confident in their brand then throw up a 3yr warranty on system failures just like the other box did. But to them, doing that would be an admission of a problem. They have their heads turned, with hands over ears, screaming LA LA LA LA so they cant here us.,, I love my PS3 but I got the other box too; have to have something to play when one goes down, at least I have 3 yrs on one of the systems not 1yr or just 90 days after a fix,, not paying Sony another $149.99, I will just chuck it in the garbage.

Thanks for your post and for pointing out what I have thought, the ylod and disk read error seem to be the most common problems. You would think at the very least Sony could give us a discount on repairs for these two issues.

Answer: Yes, if there was a problem Sony would admit it. They have with PS2. But, PS3's failure rate from YLOD is less than 0.5% according to their official numbers. That's not a "problem". It's well below industry standards

Backup utility only preserves some game data, and no personal data like music, movies, or pictures.
Press square till you're in the View All mode, press triangle, Copy Multiple, Select All, copy. Repeat for music, movies and photos. Only will restore properly to the system it was made from.
It will restore to other systems. It just wont restore certain things I'm told like game installation files (which you can get from the games you still own) updates (which you get when you play the games you still own) and downloaded content from PSN (which you can redownload) Quite useful.

Sorry but when you have multiple PS3's fail on you for no reason like a lot of us have on this very forum, you start to make your own conclusions. Failure rate high or low, you can't argue the fact that most failures are the ylod or disk read errors. Besides, last I heard the failure rate had jumped to 10%

That's not how statistics work 1) Lets say you've had a PS3 fail. You get a new one. That means 50% of your PS3s have failed. That's not the statistic for all PS3s 2) As someone else said, people are far more likely to post their system failed than otherwise. The squeaky wheel effect. You're not seeing the other side of the coin so to speak.
Besides, last I heard the failure rate had jumped to 10%
Last officialy released numbers from Sony were 0.5%

Did you read my little story? I cant make the dumb thing restore something hundreds of times more valuable then any game saves. I dont want to bash, I really want it to be possile, but I obviously need some help or something. I didnt manually backup every individual file, as I thought the backup utility would protect all my goodies. I just got an email back from Sony saying it should be possible to restore my pictures, but how the heck can I? Every PS3 tells me "this backup was made from a different PS3 system, a full restore is not possible", and then no pics restore. As I said I've tried on a 60GB, 2 80GB's, a 120GB, and now a 160GB PS3 all with the exact same result. Do you think I could mail my external drive to Sony and get them to restore the files? I asked in my return email, we'll see. Have you made a backup using the backup utility and successfully restored it to a system other then the one it was made from? Did your pictures restore? Thanks for the help.
