YLOD is caused from the heat sinks, these 2 square shaped things right by them have lost the pasting on them (solder or something its called) and thats what makes it YLOD.

bad bd disc drive can be fixed by yourself if you have the knowlege.

and to sum it all up, ps3 only gets broken in any way whatsoever if u mistreat it.

u should treat it like a high end pc that costs hundreds - thousands to build, you wouldnt do anything to ruin that right?

especially if ur ps3 has 4 usb ports and card readers etc.

actually its an idicator on several issue. it's like a check engine light on your car. it just tells you there is a problem. it is not specific to any one problem.

PS1 Fatty- works since I got it at launch

PS2 Fatty - works since I got it at launch

64, NES, SNES, Dreamcast, regular game boy

All these work...

Yet my 40GB managed to YLOD?

I did back up my save data, but sorry to tell you... when you get a new PS3 it usually doesn't accept most of your save data. Only reason I'm considering buying a new PS3 is because I have so much DLC on my PS3 and it feels like a waste to just leave the account.

I love how people who still have working systems rag on the ones that have YLOD'd systems. You realize YLOD can happen to anyone, right? I never neglected my PS3 and it still broke down.

Once again I'm sorry but I have seen so much with my own eyes it's really hard to believe that astronomically low rate.

Alright, let's play that game.

My 60GB launch unit still works.

Let's continue shall we?

My PS1 launch unit, and PStwo launch unit, still work.

My PSP launch unit, and PSP slim launch unit, still work.

I have a second gen, original model PSP, and another slim that also still works.

My XBOX, SNES, N64, GCN (bought used) still work.

My GBC, GBA (bought used), DS lite (launch day), VirtualBoy still work.

My PocketStation and WonderSwan Color still work.

Failure rates for all of the above: 0%

I've gone through 1 XBOX360, so has my dad and 2 of my friends. I know of only 1 360 owner who's unit hasn't failed. Failure rate: 80%

every single system you named that you got at launch still works because of what is inside of them (aka barely anything). xbox 360 and ps3 require much more powerful gpu's and cpu's, software, hardware, motherboards, chips, dvd/blu ray players, power supplies, fans, etc. to support the amazing games it has for each system. what goes into a gameboy is probably less than what goes into an ipod these days, so you cant really compare a gameboy to a ps3....there is absolutely no comparison. i dont know if youve ever opened up the original ps2 (fat) and tried to fix it but theres so much less going on in there than a ps3. ive opened my ps3 up 2 times already to reflow the motherboard and it gets pretty complicated. youre naming game systems that are smaller than the blu ray player of the ps3. my 60gb just died on me a couple weeks ago and unfortunately, there is no sure fire way fix to it because it just died 2 days after that. congratulations to you for still having yours, and i hope it lasts for another year or two. if not, you can add a system to your failure rate because i guarantee you it wont last forever like your others.

Same thing I was gonna say. As complexity increases, there is a higher probability of something going wrong.

You're right. Cause the correct number is 0.5% of PS3s have suffered from YLOD.

As complexity increases, there is a higher probability of something going wrong.

I'm quoting you cause what you said was shorter.

I agree. My examples were not meant to prove my statistics, but to disprove our first-hand statistics.

Though we could argue PS2 was pretty complex, it had a high failure rate, and Sony learned from it how to improve build quality with PS3.

PS3 got a slim model faster than PS2 did, we could argue Sony has been decreasing it's complexity at a higher rate.

i guess i'm one of the unlucky ones. i have had 9 refurbs and 1 original 80gig motorstorm bundle break.. the original got ylod 5 months after purchase. then 6 refurbs were doa. the others failed from bluray drive failure to hard drive failure. the recent one just died on the 24th. while i was playing a rented game of uncharted 2. this was the final refurb for me i went and bought a slim. because sony sends junk that either is broken as you receive it or it breaks right after warranty. and i'm fedup with it frankly. if the slim is the same i will never buy a console again. i have had every console except crapbox. none of my others have broken. it's ridiculous to think they can get away with ripping us off like this. i hope the go under if they don't start taking blame for their crappy designs and cheap china labor. then sony deserves to be put out of business. i treat my electronics with love because they cost so much money why wouldn't i. then the ps3 just breaks for **bleep**ts and giggles when ever it feels like it. nah somethings wrong and it's all going to come out sooner or later. and when it does it will make a world of difference as to the way sony treats it's customers.

Hmph... they probably won't admit it fully because if they do, it's obviously bad for their business.

But will probably come up with cheaper machines to override the issue, if it ever happens on a larger scale than it is right now.

They kind of overdone this with PS2 though, and that probably resulted into more people turning to that Box thing.

I'm gonna have to say that Sony, most likely, would never admit that their is fault in their systems, but then again who would? You risk losing not only a large amount of money, but loyalty in admiting you have problems with your system. Sony KNOWS their PS3s are flawed. They would never admit it.

Don't you think that they have lawyers advising them of the situation?

If there were a massive problem a-la RRoD i.e over a certain percentage failing due to an inherent design fault, then they would have to recall, extend warranties etc.

Either that or someone would have taken them to court by now don't you think?

Don't get me wrong, I honestly feel bad for those that have had problems, but calling Sony a bunch of crooks is not very constructive.
