when the laser lens fails in the system it won't spin the disc over because that is what recognizes the disc. it might spin it for a second to try to read it. it should at least try to spin it over breifly. if not, it could be one of the cables that hook to the bluray drive are loose or broken, or maybe the deck that spins the disc is bad. if you attempt to fix it yourself, you might want to buy the laser and the deck, because it is only $10 more than just buying the laser.

Thanks Jenkins, good advice.

Do you know a reputable place for us to buy repair parts for PS3?

try this site. they sell either the lens by itself or the lens and the deck and they have a much better warranty on them then most do that offer them on ebay. just make sure you are getting the right one. you either have the single laser lens or the dual laser lens. you need to replace it with the same one. and if you want to go an easier route. you can buy the whole drive. it is easier to replace the whole drive because when you just do the laser sometimes it is a pain to realign the mechanism that accepts and ejects the disc, and the only thing you need to do when you replace the whole drive is switch the little controller board or motherboard from your old broken drive to the new one. now buying the whole drive usually costs about $100 so by doing just the lens you would save money but only if it is worth the frustration you might get in just doing the lens.

My usual advice is to just send the system in...I tried fixing my PS2 before and I pretty much made things worse....Let the pros handle it :-)

wow thats a hunk of change that i don't really have at the moment. I'll just have to wait before I can do that. What I find weird is that the system continues to spin the disk as long as its in there and still has the disk loading animation. What I have heard is that most people will have the disk stop spinning after around 30 seconds or so and the disk loading animation will also just change to the clock as well. Its just a good thing that for my brother he only has 3 disk games the rest are downloadable games so for now its fine for him to just play burnout and fat princess and bf1943 and ps1 classics. Anyone know why mine just keeps spinning and loading till i turn it off (I wanted to see how long it would do this so I just put a game in and watched a half hour tv show when I went back to the playstation the disk was still trying to load and i went and listened to the ps3 and the disk was still spinning...

well it could be that the lens is so dirty that using a lens cleaning disc won't clean it enough. so you might try to open the bluray drive up and clean the lens with some alcohol. also, it could be that the lens is weak and not completely broken so in a way it can tell the disc is there but is not powerful enough to actually read it. also, one thing you might want to check is the mechanism that moves the laser lens back and forth. check to see if it is lubricated because sometimes that not being lubed right can cause the lens not to be where it is supposed to be in order to read the disc properly and it gets stuck. this is actually a common thing that happens to the BOX where if you lube the gear that moves the lens, it fixes the problem. usually with it though you can tell fairly easily because when you put a disc in you can hear a grinding noise from inside the console. but hey, it's worth looking into and won't cost anything if it is the problem except for some time and some oil.

Well I tried the lens cleaner but it didn't fix my problem so it's with a heavy heart that I've decided to send in my system to Sony. I'd just like to say thank you to everyone on the forum for all your help. You guys are great and one of reasons why the playstation brand is so successful. Second I'd like to say that I've been buying PS consoles, like many of you, since the beginning and have accepted that things wear down after awhile. Even though I've  kept up with the maintenance of my systems,  I've had to purchased  every PS console twice due to lens trouble after 3-4 years of having it. But to have the same lens issue happen AGAIN to my PS3 that I love, a little over a year after it was purchased is disheartening to me. My faith in the brand is definitely shaken, I'm just  so tired of this! Though I'll probably change my mind later on, but the way I feel now I really can't see myself supporting the brand in the future. Again You guys Rock!!! Thank You for all your advice and support.

It is not enough to succeed, others must fail.........
Kudos!
