if it just shut off and the light is a solid red, then the system overheated, and if you let it cool down for a while it should come back on again later, but when it does that there is usually something wrong with the cooling process of the system. now if you see a yellow light followed by a blinking red, then you have a serious problem related to hardware failure. if the system is just overheated, it might be that the cooling system is clogged up with dirt or the cooling fan isn't working properly inside the system. also, it could be that the thermal paste on the cpu and gpu has worn out and is not helping to cool them off enough, which if that is the case and you keep using it until it overheats, the system hardware will eventually fail. i would suggest either taking it apart yourself or have it done for you and servicing the system before that overheating problem becomes a dead ps3. also if you are keeping it in an enclosed area like an entertainment center and not giving it any breathing space, that could cause overheating as well. you need to keep it out in the open on a solid surface when you use it, and not on the carpet.
