Just wanna say sorry to anybody who gets a bricked system from the update. God only knows why some get bricked. Probably some little insignificant game save or some ubscure garbage that you all have in common. I hope sony deals with you guys in a fair maner (ie fixes it for free and hooks you up with some free goods as compensation). My system updated with no issues but I have no doubt some people did get bricked. I know the pain all to well (I'm on my fourth 360). Good luck guys and just ignore all the haters. They react out of fear. Nobody wants to think a mandatory update will kill your system.
Everything I see related to this topic from people who have talked to Sony is that Sony is fixing out of warranty PS3's for free. Sony froze the update so no one else will have the problem. As soon as the first PS3 that comes into their repair center with this, they will know what happened and fix the update so it doesn't happen again. I do want to post one last time before I leave, because I KNOW people read at most the last page of a forum, YOU CAN FIX IT YOURSELF: You need to format your PS3 hard drive. If that's scary to you, send it to Sony. If that doesn't phaze you, you won't need anyone's help doing it.
NO WE CERTAINLY CAN NOT . Not when this has occured. "The most widely noted problem is systems simply failing to reach the XMB upon booting, instead getting stuck on a screen with only the familiar "wave" background displayed." quoted from this article..... http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/02/sony-responds-to-adverse-firmwa
re-2-40-effects/ So you see your statement of "If that's scary to you, send it to Sony." is condecending and innaccurate. You may stop posting now.
Search this thread for people who formatted their drives got them and it got them into the XMB. YOu are simple wrong. Some people who own consoles dont have any idea how to format a drive. For them, it is a scary thing and they shouldn't futz around with the PS3 like that, they might break something. It's good advice. You are a troll. So if I understand you correctly, you are suggesting I VOID my warrenty by breaking into my PS3 to initiate repairs myself? Not gonna happen, and no reason it should.
ok even if you have no warrenty sony should replace all of us with a bricked ps3 and throw something in for us cuz i have a recorded phone conversation from yesterday at around 6 with customer support acting like they have never heard of this and trying to get me 2 pay $150 to get it fixed and they told me wiping the HDD wouldnt work (even though so many people posted that it did) and that the problem was with the motherboard
We are in AGREEMENT on this Sir. SONY should indeed repair ALL the systems affected by the 2.40 Update, regardless of if they are under warrenty or not.

Sounds like you got someone in customer service who has no idea what they were talking about.... Shame that Sony does hire people like this on occasion.

I really wonder if some of the PS3s which are affected by the 2.40 arent Chipped/modded PS3's Because don't forget if you have chipped/modded your PS3 forget the warranty and forget your PS3. Sony will throw it out of a window. I know that the person who has chipped/modded his PS3 will not respond on this, but if theyre reading think twice before sending your PS3 to Sony. Also there must be a pattern on this, we will know it soon though.

hi i havnt read the whole topic just one page, so im buttin in here ive saw news articles saying there doesnt seem to be a link whether its US residents or EU etc. that there isnt a link to alot of different type of things however the one thing i havnt seen is people asking the simple uestion like what model is your psp, not wether its 40gb, but what is its code i know my ps3 is a CECHC03, and i live in Belfast, Ireland ive checked with two other active friends on PSN, who live in the same area, and they dont appear to have any problems im just providing this info just incase it can help, id hate to see my ps3 broken, my brother has already given me a scare anyway if this hasnt already been asked post you PS3 MODEL CODE, i think you can find it on the back of the PS3, there should be a sticker, post everything that you see and maybe then a link can be found cya and unlucky to those who broke their ps3s, and unlucky for those who managed to upgrade, theyre gonna have to wait longer for the needed game patches

No. I'm pretty sure I know exactly what happened. If you a have 2.4 installed and running, look at the XMB and you'll notice something. There's NEW options available. Quite a few of them actually. All XMB themes are now useless, because they won't theme ALL of the XMB now. The freeze is happening right before the XMB loads, what is the XMB going to load before it shows you something on your TV? Your XMB Theme. Profile settings and network settings are stored as the same place as your firmware, which is NOT on your hard drive. Since we now know from the many people reporting success that formatting the PS3 hard drive fixes the problem, what ever is causing the freeze is on the hard drive. The only thing I can think of is XMB themes. From what I know, everything else is stored on the came chip as the firmware.
If this is true and I'm willing to bet it is, do NOT under any circumstances download any XMB themes or load any XMB themes on a post 2.4 updated PS3. Delete them.

You could be right on that, also before there comes some misunderstanding my PS3 is fine its 2.40 and there was no Theme at the moment i downloaded it. Also i have the Cech04 model i hope that helps aswell. I wonder what the results will be. PepticBurrito wrote:
