I just got Mission Impossible 3 on Blu-ray, and I put it into my PS3 to play. My TV support 480p, 720p and 1080i. All my settings on my PS3 are set to output in 720p using an HDMI cable. Why is it when I put in M:I:III, it outputs in 480p and not 720p?

Everytime the resolution changes, my TV shows it in the top left corner.

The PS3 will only play blu-ray movies at 1080p or 480p if your TV does not accept 1080p direct inputs. Since your TV is 1080i, the Blu-ray movie will play at 480p. Hope this clarifies things for you.

Not quite.  Blu-Ray movies are encoded as 1080p.  They can output as 1080p, 1080i, or 480p.

Enable 1080i output on the PS3, and the movies will output at 1080i instead of 480p.

Wrong.  Blu-ray displays in 480p, 1080i, and 1080p.  Set your PS3 to 1080i so you can get the best image possible on your TV.  Blu-ray doesn't support 720p and that is why it goes to 480p.

I checked off 1080i as one of my TV's outputs, and it shows the movie at 1080i now.

I also called Sony asking them about this, but the guy on the phone told me he has no idea why it won't play at 720p. I actually didn't know that Blu-ray movies don't output at 720p. Thanks for the clarification guys.

I have an Xbox360 with HD DVD add on and the side by side comparison with the same movie "MIssion Impossible 3"  Is no contest.

The HD DVD is cleaner and sharper it totally blows away the PS3 blu ray version.

The PS3 blu ray version of MI 3 is very grainy.

I hope there is firmware fix for this issue. Othewise I'm going to continue buying HD dvd movies and NOT BLU RAY!!!

Kudos!
