I've noticed alot of people on here with media sharing issues. It's actually quite easy and uncomplicated.
TVersity: My Installation and Settings Tutorial (CLICK HERE)
Supports AVI (divx/xvid) streaming via transcoding as well as several other formats.
In TVersity, be sure to allow both TVersity.exe and MediaServer.exe firewall access or IT WON'T FUNCTION. Video from Rizla420...Walk-through
For Windows Media Player 11 (NOW SUPPORTS DIVX AND XVID):
- Download and install Windows Media Player 11 (as I'm sure many of you already have).
- Click on the Library tab
- On the left you'll see a tree structure. Right click on Library in the tree structure.
- Click Media Sharing
- Enable your options, what folders, devices, etc. Further explanation
- When your PS3 turns on and scans, Windows will pop up and ask if it's ok to allow the device. Allow it.
Also, Windows Media Player does not have to be open for media sharing to function. The computer and PS3 only need to be connected to the same router. The router should be UPnP enabled (Universal Plug-n-Play).
Be sure to remember to add files to the Windows Media Player library so they will be shared. Media Player can automatically scan for files. When I browse files on my PS3, I tend to browse by folder, so I don't worry about organization within Media Player or playlists.
For Nero MediaHome: Please click this link to a fellow poster
Then on your PS3 you should be able to browse your files and play the ones that the PS3 supports (mpeg, mp3, photos) as well as transcoding.
Known PS3 Natively Supported Formats (please let me know if I've missed any):
- MPEG
- DivX
- Xvid
- MPG
- MP3
- WAV
- WMA
- MP4
- JPEG
- JPG
- BMP
- GIF
- WMV

- Allegro Media Server (Mac OSX, Windows - commercial)

If all else fails, you can try this info from our good friend Revo77. Or thoughts from our other good friend: NachoF wrote: Two details you arent mentioning you might wanna add to your Tversity tutorial.... for Tversity to work properly you need to change the service configuration to log in as an administrator, for example my subtitles werent working until I did that, and I have read there are some other things that might not work if you dont do it......
" In addition to that, you may need to change the log-on account of the TVersity service (by default it is set to the local system account) to a user account in which Windows Media Player and the additional directshow components were installed (these are necessary in order to provide decoding for the media formats you need). Please refer to this FAQ section for step by step instructions on how to do that. If you have no intention to play online media and to do any kind of transcoding then you can leave the log-on account as is, otherwise leave it as is for now and later on if you experience transcoding issues, consider changing it."

It does seem simple and straightforward, but unfortunately there are many of us, myself included who are having tremendous difficult with it. I guess I need to configure my set up, but alas I'm not making any headway and I'm not in the know. But I know there's someone on the boards who will be able to solve the problem.

Why don't we stickyl this? And also add disclaimers about what file types the ps3 can currently play, and how to convert them if they are a different format (ps3 video 9)

OK so here's my problem. I have a ton of videos on mpeg-4's that are quicktime files apparently. I know the PS3 suppors them, but WMP will not accept them. Is their a codec I need to install for it or something?
Owner of a 8800GTX and a 160gig PS3. Yes, I'm a gamer.
Games I'm buying within the next year- -PC- Gears of War, Crysis, Quake Wars, Bioshock, Half Life Orange Box, Team Fortress 2. -PS3- Unreal Tournament 3, MGS4, Gran Turismo 5, Haze, Killzone 2, DiRT, and Army of Two.

Ok this is what my screen looks like when I get to step 4. When I click on the check box nothing happens. When I click "Ok" nothing happens. When I have the PS3 search for Media Servers, nothing happens. The only way to get out of this screen is to click "Cancel". I have tried this with my firewall completely disabled, nothing happens. I have tried going to service.msc and nothing happens. So Mr Simple 6 Step Process, what do I do now? This is starting to get really frustrating and it really show where Microsoft shines, because setting this up on the 360 was a breeze, but it just seems like Sony is like, here ya go, good luck idiot. They give us this option with no instructions, a lot of different ways to go about setting it up (ie different programs) and no guarentee that it is going to work. Whereas MS is like, use this program, and do this, and presto, it works. (stricken for ranting) *sigh*. Ok well if anyone has any ideas, your help with be much appreciated. EDIT: I guess I will give you guys a little more background on my setup. I have DSL connection with a Zyxel P-330W wireless router (has worked fantastic for everything). There is 1 desktop (parents in office) and my PS3 (in my bedroom) that is hooked up to the router using LAN. My laptop (also in my bedroom) is connected using WLAN. I tried that ORB program and my PS3 found it on my computer (so I know this will work, eventually), but the interface was too wonkey and I didnt like the idea of using a website based program, so that is why I want to use WMP11.

Here is a different way to do it, see if it helps. This is how to set up media sharing using firmware update 1.80. You must have your PS3 connected to your computer via a network. (Meaning it must share the same internet connection as the pc you are trying to connect it to.)
1)Download Windows Media Player 11 2)Install Windows Media Player 11 3)Once installed click on Tools in the title bar 4)Click on Options 5)Click on Library 6)Click on Configure Sharing 7)Click on Settings 8)Make sure Allow New Devices and Computers Automatically is checked 9)Make sure All Ratings are checked 10)Click on OK
Everything should work fine. The PS3 should automatically detect your PC now. If you want to add pictures for your PS3 to see them they must be in the MyPictures folder of your main account on your PC.
Now you can have all the music, videos and pictures from your PC right on your PS3! __________________
