i agree with DPsx7. Its very easy for a programmer to programm the next firmware version to selectively break few of the consoles. May be write a line of code that disables the reading of disks. If the system is out of warrenty, its $150 charges. Thats too bad. If sony moderators are reading this, here are few solutions: 1 When installing a new firmware version, the system should backup the last firmware installed on PS3. In-case new firmware doesnot works, then at-least we can switch back to previous version. 2 As a Personal computer has an option to reinstall windows, in case the system is corrupted, PS3 should also have a option to re-install everything, may be from a operating system CD/DVD/USB-disk etc. My console worked fine for 9 months and then it broke. There is no certainity that if it gets fixed now then when will it break next. This way PS3 is no better than X-box 360. This is really bad thing for PS3 reputation. I had been a loyal fan to Playstation, but this thing is real disappointment.

I came to this forum to see if anyone else was having the same problem and to see if there was a solution. Why would I be lying..... I've had the system since early this year. Never had any problems with it now this..... Thanks for all your help...... As for being my first post.....I'm not some kid who plays on forums all day. I didn't even know this one existed until I was doing a search for my "NEW" problem on Google. Thought maybe I could get some intelligent help with the issue. You just proved that wrong.....

DPsx7 wrote: I swear this should be grounds for a lawsuit. I'm not the type of person who would suggest this for just anything as I think a lot of stupid things end up in court. But for them to basically disable your system until you update it, and then BREAK it, is just an inexcusable way for them to make $150.
Good thing for Sony theres no conclusive evidence that a firmware update broke the OP's Ps3. Yeah, it seems like a stretch to say his BD drive failed coincidentally right when he downloaded the 2.42 update, but its not 100% impossible that it could actually just be bad luck. You can't pursue a lawsuit without solid evidence, and there really isn't any in a case like this.
