I got a PS3 today and had some difficulty connecting to the internet initially. Then I disabled my wireless router's encryption and it downloaded and update. I then enabled the encryption and it worked fine. Now, I can't get it to connect. I had to reset my modem and router for my PS3 to connect to them. I tried downloading the Resistance demo 3 times and got to like 40% each time (about an hour btw) and it says "Connection Error" and I'm kicked offline. I'm happy with the PS3's graphics and I know the games will come soon, but couldn't Sony work on getting the network to function better? I mean, it's a $600 console and it can't even connect to the internet properly? I'm very disappointed in that regard. Anyone else having these problems, and could they be fixed with a firmware update in the future?

it's not the console itself. It has to do with the router.

What kind of router is it?

NETGEAR router (WGR614 v6). But it works flawlessly for a PC in another room. And I have no trouble connecting my PSP and laptop to it.

I've had similar issues with the same brand of router.  I believe the possible fix for this was to turn off the SSID broadcast, which means you have to manually type in the SSID when configuring the network information.  I also turned UnPP on the router as well, and set it too on the PS3.

Under Router Settings? I think there were two options, one for extended range (XR) and one for 108 Mbps enabled.

Disable the 108 Mbps option.  I think I've read that it causes excessive heat build up with heavy usage and the router is incapable of cooling itself well enough to handle it, thus it tends to freeze, drop connections, and requires it to be hard booted.

Hope this helps you.

I read the thread about disabling the SSID broadcast. UnPP (Universal Plug 'N Play) shouldn't change anything either. It's for devices to auto-connect through a firewall (kinda the way I understand it). But I haven't had trouble connecting to my router, just sometimes my connection drops. The thing with XR and 108 Mbps I don't have. My router supports up to 54 Mbps and that's where it's at. Thanks for the ideas though. :smileyhappy:

PSPDawg:

I have the exact same wireless router you have, connected thru to my cable moden, but I can't even obtain an IP address.
When I set-up the router, I had to add the MAC addressed of the wireless card to my laptop and the PSP's address, then viola, it worked like a charm.  I even set-up WEP Encryption.
Now ever time I try to do "Internet Connection Settings" on the PS3 (after SCAN --> easy --> automatic everything) it cannot obtain the IP address and the "connection error 8010..." message appears.

I've read all about disabling the SSID broadcast, disabling the WEP encryption, but to no avail can I obtain an IP.
I've even entered the MAC address of the PS3 to the router's access list but still nothing.
Its odd, my wireless router shows up 100% but I can't seem to get past it.
How did you set-up yours?

I've updated the firmware on the router from the Netgear site, plus updated the PS3 system to FW 1.32.

Anyhelp is surely appreciated!

when i enabled UPnP it actually added it's own little stuff to it. I noticed like two extra applications that were using it and it was all from the ps3. Well not application but still. it came from the ps3.

Well its weird.  I've tried wirelessly (Scan-->"Selected Router"-->Security Settings: None-->Easy) then the error message.
I've trie the same but after security settings (None-->Manually-->Automatic-->UPnP (tried Enabled/Disabled) and still an error msg.
Hell, I even tried it wired (but from the router to the PS3) under the "Wired" option & "Wireless" option; still nothing.

Some people tried port forwarding, using DMZ, and the whole shutting everything down cold method but it seems to vary pending on the situation.  I can't really see why I'd have to do any of the "remedies" above if my laptop and PSP work fine?!

It seems like the port forwarding w/ DMZ set-up seems to work, but I'd like to save it as a last reserve.

I don't know why you can't obtain the IP address. I had trouble with that a few times, but I reset my network and it connected (even though the connection dropped shortly afterward). Try unplugging your modem and router. Then plug in your modem, wait like 45 seconds, plug in your router, and wait another 45 seconds, and then turn on your PS3. Maybe it should connect then. I

also have cable btw. But for me when I scan, it finds my network at something like 65%. I didn't play around with the MAC address. I just went to Network Connections> Wireless> Scan> then chose it> entered my WEP key and chose Automatic for everything else. I haven't tried connecting my PSP to my PS3 yet.

And by the way, how did you update your PS3 to the latest firmware if you didn't have an internet connection? You downloaded from playstation.com? Because when I was first having problems, I turned off my network security and it connected long enough to download the update. Sorry if that resetting your network thing doesn't work. Try connecting your PS3 to your router via ethernet if possible and see if that connects you to the internet.
Kudos!

As you can see from my fast posting I'm dossing at work!

I updated via the PSP's memory stick (just downloaded the System Update, stuck it on the Mem. Duo, slotted it in the PS3).
I haven't tried shutting the modem and router down yet, but I did have to do that when installing the router prior to being a PS3 owner.
I'll try it out...but if that stil doesn't work, I'll be back!

I'm not going to even try to connect the PSP to the PS3... I like hacking my PSP!
Kudos!
