UPDATE:: Been two weeks now since this problem, and sure enough, 56% freeze everytime still. BUT, after talking with about 5 people over the course of these weeks and trying everything from hard reboots, to reseting the hard drive, I finally got somebody that just said, yeah, it's broke, we don't know why, we'll just exchange it. So, for anybody that has the error code 8002f1c1, just go ahead and call sony and tell them the error code. They should just direct you on how to do an exchange. The girl told me that they'll just have to try to restore it manually or just trash it b/c of some internal hardware error or something. I hate to lose all my saved crap, but hell, it's better than paying for another one. ALSO, if your warranty is expired, be prepared to pay $150 for a new one. I bought mine on launch (nov 17 last year) and they were pretty helpful in giving me some leeway by a couple weeks so you shouldn't have that problem unless you just get a chump.

Today i´ve tryied to update my system from FW 1.80 to FW 2.30. My wireless connection wasn´t working well, it gives me a message that wasn´t finding any wireless network on the area. So my controler wasn´t connecting by bluetooth, only via USB. I thoght my wireless board was fried, so i didn´t care about it and continued to do the update. Firstly i downloaded the UPDATE on the internet in my PC and copied it on a memory stick using my PSP. Then i have put the memory in the PS3 and started to update the system. in the middle of the process, on 70%, it gave me the 8002f1c1 error message... The system tryied and re-tryied it 3 times. then i got the error message... i turned off the system and turned back on.. the system automaticaly re-started to try to update it. It always stoped at 70% and gave the error message. I decided to take the PS3 apart because i live in Brazil and here Sony doesn´t distribute oficialy the PS3 so, there is no oficial service. I unmounted all the system, and saw that the FLAT CABLE from the wireless board was released. I decided to take the motherboard Batery off, i thought that maybe the system will erase it´s memory and start everything from the beggining. Then i have mounted it back and made sure that the FLAT CABLE from wireless board was firmly locked. I turned the system on and it completed the update work 100% now i have my PS3 back. i think that this 8002f1c1 error message shows you that therre is some part of the system (hardware) failature diruing the update process. thanks for everybody, i hope that i helped you guys. I've got this error too, when upgrading to 2.42 (not sure what the old version was). Where do I find the battery exactly? I opened it up, but now things are getting complex... (I have a US 60gb model) EDIT: Found the battery: http://i.techrepublic.com.com/gallery/41955.jpg EDIT2: Tried it, but didn't work for me unfortunately Message Edited by Shadow_Zero on 08-07-2008 12:24 AM

GOOD NEWS (well for me anyway, but would be interested in hearing from others) I wasn't installing the 2.01 update, I think it was the 2.42 (not sure now) - irrelevant anyway cos i too suffered from the 8002F1C1 error. After reading the boards and not wishing to invalidate my warranty, I had contacted support in UK and was preparing on sending it back, when... all of a sudden I got the update to WORK! All I did was switch off at the back, unplug everything, picked it up, and looked at it. (No shaking, I promise). I plugged it all back in including the network cable and switched on. Sure enough the update started again and I just waited patiently to bomb out. This time however, it didn't show it. Instead switched itself off between 50% and 60%. Strange I thought, so switched it back on. And woohoo, it worked - I'm in the menu again. I even checked for firmware updates and it said that I was up to date. No guesses why it decided to work all of a sudden, was it something to do with unplugging it? That's for you to tell me....

Cracking! Thanks for responding. I hope this "ever so simple" solution serves many others - certainly beats taking your unit apart! Or worse - requesting a replacement and losing all your data! Edit: will someone please inform sony "tech" support! Message Edited by beks on 10-14-2008 05:31 AM
