On my PSP Slim manual, on page 20, it says "At a scene where the symptoms appear, move the analog stick in a circular motion. This will help you determine the optimum operating range." but I learned on one of Bone of World's thread, he mentions in his manual it stated:
The odd thing is, in the manual, there is a note that says, "For best results, go to Settings/System Settings, and then with the System Information screen displayed, rotate the analog stick in a circular motion. This will adjust the analog stick's range of movement."
I can confirm that this works. On one of my PSP systems, my character would always drift to the left, sometimes in a slow circular motion. After going to system settings, and having the system information displayed (ie, MAC address, version, etc), and twirling the analog stick around, I no longer have this problem! I have shut my PSP down completely several times thinking this was a fluke but every time I boot up, my analog stick is now perfectly calibrated.
I have twirled the stick around while in-game, and that does help for a little while, but twirling it around in the System Information display seems to have a more long-lasting effect.
Just thought I'd help those with analog stick problems out. No need to tear open your PSP to fix this.

I certainly can confirm this works on the older PSP models. Whenever I would boot up GTA: VCS, and it loaded the game where I was in my safehouse, or Monster Hunter Freedom 2, my guy would walk slowly leftwards. Usually I would twirl the stick around in-game and it helped calibrate it, but if I turned the PSP off, then back on and loaded the game, there he was, walking in a circular motion again. With the advice given in the new manual, this seems to have helped dramatically because I haven't had my character drift at all now, and I have since then turned my PSP on and off several times!
Also, if I tried to calibrate it in-game, and it seemed to work for a while, I could still flick the analog stick to the left and then my guy would go right back to drifting leftwards. With the new procedure, I can flick that stick all I want and he still stays in place.

Awesome find Cykotica! I wonder why Sony didn't include this in the original PSP manual.

Good news, especially for old PSP users. There have been a lot of posts about erratic analog stick behaviour in the past. Let's hope this solves the problem for everyone. Makes you wonder why Sony never put this info in the old user manuals?
