It was REALLY silly of Sony to leave out WPA passphrase security in the PSP. It is the best way to secure your network and not throttle bandwidth and range. Anyone heard whether it will be added? If not, the WiFi will be useless in a year or two when more people start using better security,,,

I think you mean Paraphrase, It is used to generate the WEP key in your wireless router (and sometime used in client application to connect to WEP protected wireless router). Even if there is no paraphrase support in the PSP, but you still the WEP key in the PSP. So the wireless connection can be secured.

No, he means passphrase.
WPA is a replacement for WEP, because WEP is insecure (Weak Initialization Vectors in the encryption -- Google for Airsnort for more information)

Frankly, I too am suprised that sony did not initially provide WPA support. I should hope this will be addressed in future firmware updates.

Passphrase is the most simple WPA... just like a normal password but WAY WAY more secure. You can crack any WEP key in a matter of hours or at worst, days. Any script kiddie could do it. WPA provides better security, throughput and range. Not to mention, when you have friends over you can tell them the password and not a 26 digit hex key. Also easy to change, update etc. WPA.... I hope they add it soon...

Probably has something to do with Sony cheapily incorporating 802.11b instead of 802.11g into the PSP, again old technology...

I doubt that WPA could ever be added with firmware, it would need new hardware, PSP2 anyone?

Rumor has it that the PSP is already capable of 802.11i, but this feature is not currently enabled. One can only hope that the hardware supports more than 802.11b, and we can get some more speed and security out of it.

Ive got a question for you guys why would Sony include WPA support when the majority of PSP owners can barley deal with WEP.

I survived installing 2.8

Not sure what your actual point is. If I understand your point, then:

1. WEP is not secure. WPA is more secure.

2. WPA is easily to administer. So for people who likes to deal with simple english (rather than criptic hexadecimal numbers like me) WPA is a better choice.

3. Since WPA is simpler to administer than WEP (at least for me), the why not go directly to WPA and skip the WEP?

I think this summarizes the previous thread (I hope).
