blu-ray is true hd. the file size is bigger and the quality superb. when you upscale a dvd of course it is going to be worse because it is made to play a certain size, and upscaling tries to play it in hd [even though its not] so its just not as good. idk how else to explain it. lol

just blu-ray is made specifically for hd, and dvd is made for all lower end tvs.

Got a question and would like some input. Since the PS3 upscales dvds to display at 1080p, is there a reason to buy blu ray?

I dont know a whole lot about blu ray except it has a larger capicity then dvds. Thus enabling it to hold HD info since HD info takes a lot of space. But if blu ray shows movies at 1080p resolution, and the ps3 upscales dvds to the same resolution, what is the purpose of buying blu ray?

lol
and upscaled DVD does not have anywhere near the definition of NATIVE HD. Upscaling is just fancy talk for adding lines to an image of a lower resolution. All that is happening is you are duplicating lines to fill the larger resolution. Native HD resolutions have MUCH more definition, much more detail, and the clarity is insane compared to something upscaled.

do an experiment:
if you have a 1080p display, please play a DVD of any movie, using upscaling, and then please play the Blu-ray version of that movie. You will be blown away by the clarity and depth of the BD image. HD makes scenes pop, and you may very well see what some HD critics refer to as '3d', where the image just appears to pop out of the screen due to the detail, depth, and color clarity. HD images are so vibrant and are just beautiful to watch.
It's hard for me to go back to watching SD, but am forced in some situations. I love HD. No HD cable available for me when I am in school, so I am forced to use an HD antenna to grab free HD signals.

Message Edited by terminalgames on 07-01-2007 10:02 AM

ok, so it seems the dvd would have 480 lines of resolution. then when it is upscaled, they duplicate some of the lines to make it 1080 lines of resolution of duplicate lines. Then with blu ray, you are getting 1080 different lines. In that case, it makes sense that blu ray would look better. But, i am not sure how upscaling dvds would make the dvd look better. It would seem to me to only make the picture go out of proportion.
